Hosted by Cape Harbor Outfitters of Tallahassee, the Mays Pond Fly-Fishing School is held at Mays Pond Plantation in Monticello, Florida. The school focuses on fly fishing for bass, panfish, and coastal species such as redfish which has a long history in North Florida and the Gulf Coast region. This area has numerous lakes, ponds, and rivers, offering outstanding fly fishing for bass and panfish, and the Big Bend area on the Gulf Coast is renowned for a variety of saltwater species. The two-day school covers everything from fly casting, choosing the right tackle, leaders and knots, to fly selection, and how to safely release fish.

Day One
Time Activity & Description
8:00 am Student registration at Cape Harbor.
8:30 Caravan to Mays Pond Plantation.
9:30 Introduction and discussion of class program.
9:45 Classroom presentation on lines, rods, and reels.
10:45 The Orvis Progressive Method to Fly Casting part one: Video on the basic casting stroke.
11:00 Demonstration on the basic casting stroke, students casting.
12:00 pm Lunch (catered to school).
1:00 Classroom presentation – Knot tying seminar. Discussion on leaders, hands-on knot tying.
2:15 The Orvis Progressive Method to Fly Casting part two: Video on shooting line, false casting, and roll casting.
2:30 Report to casting pond for demonstration on shooting line, false casting, and roll casting. Students casting. Video tape students casting.
3:45 Classroom presentation – Equipment and accessories.
4:00 End of first day.
Day Two
Time Activity & Description
9:00 am Classroom presentation – Fly selection and how to fish flies. Tips on how to handle, photograph and release fish.
10:00 Video analysis. Presentation on the double haul.
11:00 Report to casting pond for demonstration on the double haul and casting in windy conditions. Students casting.
12:00 pm Lunch (catered to school).
1:00 Orvis-Endorsed fishing trips, tips on fishing with guides.
1:15 Fishing trip – caravan to one of the Ponds on the plantation. Demonstration on hook-setting and fish-fighting. Demonstration of fishing flies in still water. Students fishing.
3:15 Return to classroom for closing statements, and graduation certificates.
3:30 End of school.
