General cleaning tips for wool and cotton hooked, braided or woven rugs

The safest, most effective cleaning of any rug should be done by a professional service using a steam extraction method. How often you steam-clean a rug depends on the traffic the rug receives. Vacuum regularly and clean spills immediately by blotting with a clean cloth or sponge.

  • Reversible rugs (especially braided rugs) should be flipped often and cleaned when both sides are dirty.
  • Latex-backed rugs (this includes most hand-hooked rugs) cannot be cleaned with any petroleum-based solvents. These solvents break down the latex backing, causing the pile to become loose and the rug to lose its shape.
  • Smaller cotton rugs can be washed in a commercial-size washing machine (commercial machines offer a bigger tub to agitate and thoroughly rinse, plus are designed to handle the weight of a water-soaked rug during the spin cycle.)
  • Wool area rugs can be sent out to a professional dry cleaner for regular cleaning. It’s a good idea to call your dry cleaner and ask if they are equipped to handle rugs before bringing them in.

Spot removal

Removal of spots and spills is the most important way you can maintain your carpets and rugs. Responding quickly when anything is dropped or spilled can save the day...and your carpet!

Should a spill occur...

  • Immediately blot up liquids (do not rub!) with white towels or absorbent cloths; use the end of a knife or a spoon to scrape up solids.
  • Use the instruction chart below to treat the spot using the most effective treatment.
  • Always apply spot remover to a clean towel or cloth, never directly on the spot. Using small quantities at a time, work inwards from the edge of the spill to prevent it from spreading. Do not rub—this causes the spot to spread and can destroy or distort the pile. Do not soak the carpet with solution.
  • Continue to blot with clean towels until as dry as possible.

Find the source of the spot in the first column and use the corresponding methods for spot removal. If you have doubts about the spot, or how to remove it, contact a professional carpet cleaner.

Orvis Water Trapper Mats

Our Water Trapper mats work hard to keep your home, car, and garage clean and dry. Whether you use a Water Trapper under your dog's feeding station or outside on the porch, the tough, durable polypropylene fibers protect your floors and carpets by keeping dirt at the door.

To keep your Water Trapper looking fresh, simply hose it off to clean and hang it to dry in a ventilated area. It can be scrubbed with detergent if necessary and rinsed off to remove stuck-on mud, dirt, and pet food. If your Water Trapper is used in an uncovered outdoor area and is subject to heavy rain or morning dew, the mat should be allowed to dry both front and back to avoid any discoloration of the surface below.

Orvis Easy-Care AnySeason™ Indoor/Outdoor Rugs

Our newest collection of easy-care rugs effortlessly take on whatever your household dishes out, staying clean and good-looking in high-traffic areas, during mud season, and throughout a whole summer spent outdoors. Made of sturdy yet soft polypropylene, our high-performance rugs are:

  • Machine washable in smaller sizes
  • Quick drying
  • Mold- and mildew-resistant, they can be scrubbed with detergent and hosed clean
  • Able to be cleaned with bleach for difficult spills and stains

A few tips to make your indoor/outdoor rug last even longer.

  • If your rug is in an uncovered outdoor area and is subject to heavy rain or morning dew, it should be allowed to dry both front and back. Unchecked dampness will eventually cause the fiber to begin breaking down.
  • Surface smudges and grime should be sponged clean regularly using a mild detergent and warm water. Rinse with cold water and allow to dry thoroughly both front and back.
  • While these rugs are UV-treated to resist fading, nothing is completely immune to the sun’s rays. When not is use for extended periods, roll the dry rug and keep in a covered shaded area.
