Although just floating the river is an exhilarating and enlightening experience, fisherman, particularly fly fisherman, will find the Middle Fork a Heaven on Earth! Since 1973, a strict catch-and-release police has been in effect. The cutthroat trout, which is the predominant species, has thrived and, along with a few native rainbow and Dolly Varden, provides some of the finest dry-fly fishing in the country. The trout average 12 to 15 inches, with the occasional one reaching 18 to 20 inches. The Middle Fork is a great place to learn, or to simply improve one's skills.
Without roads, and with limited trail access, the Middle Fork canyon is best seen, explored, and fished by floating the river itself.
The Middle Fork is spectacular beyond imagination. It carves and churns through 106 miles of the most rugged, inaccessible, and primitive country in the United Statesa country still relatively untouched by man. There are no roads. It's wild and untamed. Come join us and share the spirit of adventure!
June, July, August, and September
Depending on snow pack and runoff, June is normally whitewater rafting time only. July brings warmer water and air temperatures and the beginning of prime dry-fly fishing, which continues through August and September.
All fly-fishing gear is included in our price. Rods, reels, leader, tippets, etc; we do NOT charge for of flies used no matter how many we go through during the course of a trip. All one needs is one's personal clothes, fishing license, and any liquor, if so inclined.
Solitude only operates on one river: Idaho's Middle Fork of the Salmon. The Middle Fork flows through the heart of the River of No Return Wilderness in central Idaho. The Middle Fork drops 3,000 feet in the 100-mile float, starting at 5,800 feet and ending at 2,800 feet in elevation. The Middle Fork is a boat fishing river and not conducive to walk and wade, due to the steep gradient and also the structure of the river bottom and river bank. Access is very limited. There are a few dirt airstrips that allow access to the river and Solitude uses these when portions of the upper river become too low to float. Solitude provides round-trip ground transportation to and from the river.
Water and air temperature vary greatly depending on the time of the year one desires to float. The average daytime temperatures range from 70 degrees to the lower 90s, and nighttime temperature range from 45 to 70 degrees. Rainfall average per year is approximately 10 inches and most of that comes in the form of Rocky Mountain thunder storms.

Q. Where is the closest airport?
A. The closest airport is in Boise Idaho. However, in June, July, and August, we meet in Stanley, Idaho. In September, guests fly into the river from Salmon, Idaho or Boise, Idaho. The flights are not included in the cost of the trip.

Great river trip for family -
By: nhfishinmom from Amherst, NH 03031, USA
This review is for Moms and spouses of fishermen. I've done it ladies: fished 7 rainy days near the Bearing Sea in AK, baked in the sun waiting for Tarpon in So. FL, slapped mosquitoes in the ME woods. This fishing trip is by far the best for all involved. Fabulous river, good food, relatively dry, virtually no bugs. More importantly, the staff is terrific and they are great with serious anglers as well as less serious fisher folk. And, they are great with kids. My 13 year - old learned to flycast this trip, and my 16 year old developed a passion for fishing that will last a lifetime. This is the fishing trip to say "yes!" to.
A blissful, untethered week in the Idaho wildernes -
By: ColoradoHam from Littleton, CO
Free from work, cell phones and e-mails. All thoughts were on fishing, camping, relaxing and spending time with friends on the amazing Middle Fork of the Salmon River. Friends became closer and the staff / guides became friends. There might not be a better place to leave everything else behind and become immersed in nature. Country Club atmosphere with fantastic food and camping setting. And, certainly country club fishing with hungry trout eager to take a well presented dry fly. Highly recommend.

If you love beautiful rivers, the wilderness and fishing, you must take this trip with Solitude. Their guides will take you safely down this wild river, put you on the fish and make you smile. The food is exceptional, and, even after 4 days of over eating, you are still eager to get in the buffet line. If you can't relax on the Middle Fork, don't bother getting up in the morning. Solitude will entertain you and take very good care of you on this wilderness trip. Don't miss it! Joe Scott Ketchum, Idaho

I would say the entire trip could be characterized by the moniker "Excellence in Motion." The River of No Return carries you on a week long adventure of wonder, excitement, uninhibited beauty, and plenty of fishing, and Solitude's Team never stops working to wow you with their wilderness expertise. The river and the team synchronize their natural abilities to make this the trip of a lifetime!!
Simply the Bomb! -

I could try and top the exclamations of the other reviews, but why do that? You've already read that. Ask yourself how many more chances you have to go and then write the check with no remorse. Its worth every penny and then some. Its not just a river trip, its time travel too.
Salmon River Flyfishing -
By: kgk007 from Twin Falls, ID, USA
In August I, my wife and 6 friends and family spent one of the most memorable and fun weeks we have ever had. Solitude brings great guides, beautiful drift boats (for the amazing fishing) and unbelievable food, and does it with a truly western casual friendly style that made us all friends by the end of the first day!

Simply the best -
By: Paul12345 from Sylva, NC
From pre-trip contact and careful advice on preparation, to getting on the river to the last day picnic simply EVERYTHING is done with care and the will to be the best. The river is its own reward, beautiful, wild at times, flowing through a majestic landscape. The fishing is great, with expert guide help if you need or want it. The food is terrific. The camping experience is very comfortable, especially for a wilderness river trip. Simply nothing is left to chance except your ability to hook and land a cut throat. And evn then, help's available if you desire. This was my third trip and I'll be back next year. The best trout fishing I've ever experienced.

This was my fourth trip down the Middle Fork with Solitude and it just gets better. The fishing was fantastic. Solitude is by far the most customer focused group I have ever traveled with. From the great guides, top of the line equipment to the over the top food served on this trip. I will go again next year as well and everyone should go with Solitude in my opinion.
