Overview

The fishing camps at Yellowstone Outfitters have been in operation since 1950—over three generations of outfitting. They have years of experience in guiding wilderness trail rides, fishing, and sightseeing pack trips. Having made a lifetime of this operation, they have an in-depth knowledge of the area, and what it takes to make a memorable trip. Being an Orvis-Endorsed Outfitter, the horses and equipment are top notch. Safety is always first and the knowledgeable staff will impress you with the expertise of their techniques.

What is Provided to Customer

We pick up our guests at their hotel in Jackson, Wyoming the morning of the trip and have them back in Jackson late afternoon the day they come back out of the wilderness. We furnish all meals, spring bar tents and foam mattresses, a great cook, knowledgeable fishing guides, experienced packers, and good stories around the campfire.

Imagine yourself standing knee-deep in the Yellowstone or Thorofare Rivers with the unsurpassed beauty of the Tetons surrounding you. Meanwhile, the beauty and serenity of the vast and spectacular scenery will astound you. The sounds of the whispering pines, the alpine waters, and the distant sound of coyotes will intoxicate you. The warm glow and radiant heat of open campfire under the night sky filled with stars so bright will mesmerize you.

Typical Weather by Season

Typical daytime highs are around 80 degrees and the lows are around 40 degrees. It is not uncommon to get an afternoon rain shower. We strongly advise you to prepare for cold conditions; in the mountains, cold weather is possible any time.

Itinerary

Sample of Typical Itinerary

We will pick you up in Jackson at 6:30 am and transport you via vehicle to our base camp, 45 miles from Jackson. Your gear is then packed on the mules and you are introduced to your trusty mountain horse and you head for the Teton Wilderness and a trip of a lifetime. Once you have reached one of the campsites, you can settle down and relax. The experienced crew takes care of all the work and mouthwatering hearty meals with all the trimmings are served. Each day you will have the option to go to a different site to fish. You will climb on your horse and your fishing gear will be loaded on a pack mule and ride to the fishing location. In the evenings, you can relax around the campfire. The last day is spent riding back to civilization.

What Should Customers Bring?

  • A canteen or sturdy water bottle
  • Sunscreen and a good supply of heavy deet content insect repellent

Fishing Gear
An 8- or 9-foot fly rod in 5- through 7-weight lines is recommended, as are two or three extra reel spools with floating and sinking head lines on them; several tapered leaders of 7-12 feet and extra spools of 3X to 6X tippet material; we also suggest you bring two reels and two rods. Rods should be packed in sturdy tube cases. Reels should be packed inside a duffle bag. Hip or chest waders, creel, and fishing vest are also important. Include a pair of forceps, nail clippers, and polarized sunglasses.

Spinning gear should be of ultra-light or light grade; 4-6 lb. test line is recommended. Lures would include: tail-less silver and gold Mepps, Panther Martins, and spoons in sizes 0-1. Remember, you are 24 miles from any store and you should pack enough tackle, film, medications, and personal items with this in mind.
