Overview

Chetola is an 87-acre resort in the heart of North Carolina's Blue Ridge Mountains. Located at an elevation of 3,600 feet, the resort dates back to 1846 when the only structure on the property served as a way station for goods traveling up and down the mountain. Many of the resort's recreational activities take place on or around Chetola Lake, which visitors drive around as they enter the property. The resort is surrounded by a 3,600-acre national park featuring more than 25 miles of multipurpose trails. In addition to fly fishing programs, Chetola offers packages throughout the year for snow skiing, zip lining, clay shooting, as well as spa packages and around special events such as Blowing Rock Winterfest and Savor! Blowing Rock.

What is Provided to Customer

Chetola provides most everything that is needed for fly-fishing trips including rods, reels, fly-lines, leaders, flies, waders and refreshments. Round trip transportation to fishing waters is also provided.

Region/Terrain Where You Fish

Boone Fork Creek is a catch-and-release-only stream with the highest water classification in the state. It is located at the headwaters of the Holston River and is accessible by 4 wheel or all-wheel drive. Full-day wade trips for trophy trout are offered at Big Horse Creek, a wild, pristine Appalachian Mountain stream at 4,000 feet elevation. Half-day adventures are available at The Paradise, a high mountain valley stream at 3,500 feet with fishing for spring-raised brook, rainbow and brown trout. Full-day float trips for brook trout, rainbow trout, wild brown trout and smallmouth bass are featured on the Watauga, South Holston and Catawba rivers. Smallmouth bass float trips are on the New, North Toe, Nolichucky and Holston rivers. All locations are for beginners or seasoned anglers. Round-trip transportation is provided by Chetola Resort.

In late 2015 additional fishing locations will be available at the Chetola Sporting Reserve at Blue Ridge Mountain Club. In addition to excellent fishing, the reserve offers sporting clays, archery and horseback riding.

Typical Weather by Season

Average temperatures for Blowing Rock range from the low 20's to mid 40's in winter, mid 40's to low 60's in spring and fall and mid 50's to upper 70's in summer. Rarely do temperatures exceed the low 80's due to the high elevation. Average monthly precipitation is about 5.6 inches with the highest precipitation occurring in March and the lowest in December. Average hours of daylight in summer are 14, in winter about 9.4. Water temperatures range from 48 to 69 degrees.

Sample of Typical Itinerary

Start the day off with a homemade breakfast in Timberlake's Restaurant. Your guide will pick you up for your full- or half-day fishing excursion. If you choose the half-day option, you can have lunch in Timberlake's or in one of the quaint mountain cafes in Blowing Rock. After exploring the downtown area, take a short ride on the Blue Ridge Parkway and marvel at the beautiful mountain scenery. Once you've returned to the resort, visit the Spa for a soothing massage or facial. Enjoy a delicious dinner in Timberlake's Restaurant overlooking Chetola Lake and featuring delicious dishes such as Black Angus filet, Cornmeal-Crusted Trout, Roasted Carolina Quail, or Pan-Seared Salmon. For the more casual diner there's a wide variety of lighter fare, including an array of fresh salads, fried oysters, chicken wings, and a variety of burgers for both meat-lovers and vegetarians. Enjoy an after-dinner drink or specialty coffee in Headwater's Pub.

Inn guests have access to a guest pantry (24-hour access--stocked with snacks such as ice cream, fresh baked cookies, assorted beverages, coffee/tea/hot chocolate and more), the Inn library, an afternoon social and nightly turn-down service.

All guest rooms feature either a king bed or queen bed, gas fireplaces, whirlpool tubs, BOSE Wave Radio, in-room safes and robes. Most rooms have a view of Chetola Lake.

Species You Fish for by Season

We fish year round, catch and release, for rainbow trout, brown trout, brook trout and western golden trout. Fishing for Smallmouth Bass is offered on full day float trips on the New River, North Toe River, Nolichucky River and Holston River.

Q. Where is your lodge located?
A. Chetola Resort is located 75 miles northwest of Charlotte, NC, six miles south of Boone, NC (Appalachian State University). We are in the Blue Ridge Mountain range just off the Blue Ridge Parkway. Airports closest to the resort are Charlotte, NC, Greensboro, NC and Tri-Cities, TN. Hickory is 35 miles south of the resort.

Q. What is the town like?
A. Blowing Rock is a quaint mountain town located on the Eastern Continental Divide. Winter sports are available from late November through March when snow is a common occurrence. Leaf changing season is at its peak from early October to late October.
