The Flying B Ranch is open year round providing some type of outdoor recreation. The steelhead fishing is best in the months of October and November in the fall and late February and March in the spring. Salmon enter our water by mid May and the season is open normally into July. Trout wait for the spring run off to moderate in late June and July before they will cooperate well and stay active on top water into September.
With many of our guests new to the outdoors, we can and do provide all gear needed for your trip: fishing and wingshooting. As people gain experience, they will provide their own gear and we will help you with specific recommendations for your trip. Lewiston Airport shuttles, open bar with a fine scotch whiskey selection, all needed fishing gear, guns and shells for wingshooters, rifles and shells for big game hunters, meat shipping for wingshooters and fishermen; just about everything you may need is provided.
The Clearwater River hosts a consistently high quality fishery almost year round; steelhead from September through March, Chinook salmon from late May into July, cutthroat trout from mid June to the end of July and smallmouth bass during the warmest months of late July through mid September. The river is accessed via drift boats along the over 40 miles of stream we fish. During the warmer parts of the year, we follow the native cutthroat trout up the Clearwater tributary's on foot for trips based from the lodge or on horseback from our comfortable wilderness camps. The water is cool enough to keep the trout feeding vigorously but warm enough for us to comfortably wet wade the freestone creeks. The drift boats are heated during the colder parts of the steelhead season and a dunking every now and then is welcomed during the summer afternoon hatches.
North central Idaho is on the Pacific side of the continental divide and is blessed with mild winters and moderate summer temperatures. Winter high temperatures average well above freezing and summer highs are normally below 90 deg giving our fishing palate a comfort zone for everyone. Most of our precipitation is in the fall and spring to stimulate the anadromous species migration with consistently mild summers for excellent fly hatches to keep the cutts hitting dry flies.
The typical lodge trip is three full days of activities and four nights of western elegant lodging. The wilderness trips are a day longer to give time for packing into and out of the remote back country camps. Custom trip dates are an option if you would like to add activities or extra days to your trip. All trips start and end with Lewiston airport shuttles with typical days; Breakfast at 7am. Activities 8-5, appetizers at 6 and dinner at 7pm. Mountain trips are quite flexible given the nature of camping and personal desires with the trout starting to rise when the sun hits the water and feeding well into the evening.
We have a very experienced and talented staff that can provide a myriad of activities here on and around the ranch. We have 25 head of horses and mules for work here at the ranch and back in the mountains, 4 certified hunter education instructors, several fly-casting and clays-shooting instructors, massage therapists on call, Lewis and Clark historical/interpretive tours, jeep tours, bird watching, Dutch oven cooking instruction and even paragliding instruction with prior arraignments during the summer.
North central Idaho is a recreation paradise. We can set you up for several activities from the white knuckle whitewater rafting and jet boating, to the relaxing Lewis and Clark historical tours.
Our lodge is 14,000 square feet of log built comfort. Your private room has satellite TV and internet, king and queen size beds, doors to both the outside decks and porches as well as to the lodge interior. Our housekeepers maintain the lounge, trophy room, offices, Jacuzzi, sauna, formal dinning and breakfast area, your room and everything you come in contact here impeccable. Our chef oversees each meal and snack with the goal of providing you with the best western quality dishes and wines. We cannot predict the weather, the fishing each day or other things watched over by nature, but we can supply you with the best of food accommodations and drink.
October and November are the prime times to get out your 7-8 weight rods to present streamers to our fall steelhead. More and more people are using Spey rods these days and if you would like to learn this method, we can help. As the weather cools in late November, we use more spin and bait casting equipment until it starts to warm again in February. Starting then through March we use a combination of bait casting and fly-fishing equipment based on the river conditions and run-off. The Chinook salmon are pretty much bait casting fish for all but the most die hard fly-fisherman so during the May to July salmon season it is drift boats and roe bags/plugs. The summer west slope cutthroats are reliable dry-fly fish with strong appetites and just as strong fighters. Your light trout travel rods are good at this time with a good selection of dry's with a nymph dropper.
The wide variety of the activities we participate in requires a matching wide range of needed gear based on season and activities. We will provide you with a recommended gear list for everything from a summer recreation retreat at the lodge to late fall elk hunts in the snow covered mountain peaks.
