Forrester's Bighorn River Resort, MT

We are an upper-end, full-service Orvis-Endorsed Lodge. In fact, we were awarded the 2010 Orvis Fly-Fishing Lodge of the Year. We have been in business for over 30 years. Our internationally trained chefs prepare five course meals not matched by many upscale restaurants in New York City. All our Orvis-Endorsed Guides are experienced, patient and are great instructors.

Date Range

With the Bighorn River being a tailwater fishery, we fish all year round. However, our peak season is April 1 through the middle of November.

What is Provided to Customer

Whether you need all fishing equipment or minimal fishing equipment we have a package to cater to all your needs.

Region/Terrain Where You Fish

The Bighorn River has limited access so the preferred choice of fishing is from a drift boat. Our experienced, Orvis-Endorsed Guides do stop at key spots for wade fishing complete with tips of the trade. This river is a tailwater so it is not affected by spring run off. The Bighorn is very fisherman friendly so from beginner to advanced, this river never disappoints.

Typical Weather by Season

Spring: mid-March to end of May 50 degrees in the middle of day and 30 degrees at night.

Summer: June 60-70 degrees. July to end of August 80-90 degrees with an occasional afternoon shower to cool things off.

Fall: 60-70 degrees to end of October. November being 50-60 degrees. Water temps around 30 degrees.

Sample of Typical Itinerary

Although we can cater to any size package, our most popular stay is three days and four nights.

3-days fishing & 4-nights lodging - $3,270 per person based on double occupancy rates. Check our website for more package deal options and payment terms.

On-site Activities

Off-site Activities

    Exceptional Experience - 6/11/2014
    By: from Pewaukee, WI

My husband, our son and I spent 4 fabulous days at Forrester's Bighorn River Resort. We caught lots of good-sized trout and had the most relaxing and enjoyable vacation. We hope to return there this fall or next year. The lodge and lodging was first class, the food was exceptional, the staff was wonderful, and the fly fishing with their guides Jaime Anderson and Jim Wilkins was fantastic! My husband and I are beginner fly fishers and our son had never fly fished before. Thankfully, our hardworking, patient, and enthusiastic (and humorous) guides were really excellent instructors who helped us master the basics. Thank you to Fran and Nick, Chefs Frank, Fran and Leanne, Jean, Matt, and the wonderful staff at Forrester's for a vacation that exceeded all our expectations.

    Great Experience - 5/22/2013

This is our first trip to Forrester's, but it will not be our last. The lodge and cabins are so comfortable, with fantastic views. Dining experience is like eating 3 meals a day at a gourmet restaurant. Dinners from Chef Frank are a true culinary delight. Fishing is fantastic - our guide, Wayne Egbert was the best. We caught more fish than ever. All things considered, it was an unbelievable fishing vacation!!! Thank you Francine, NIck and Don

    What an Experince - 5/13/2013

Spent four days on The Big Horn. The first two were fantastic....caught more good size trout than any day I have ever had in the "Lower 48"...all 16 to 18 inches or better. Third day way above average, but fourth day Mother Nature provide us a lot of wind to test us, but it was still a average or better day compared to most other rivers. The lodge and staff are more than one should expect, the staff very friendly and helpful..accomdations great and food just like the ad, "5 Star". The guide, one of most knowledgable and helpful I have ever fished with. I was wearing a walking cast on my left foot. Mike positioned the boat so my partner could wade and I could fish from boat and still had record days. I will return.

Great experience at Bighorn - 4/30/2013
By: from Bay Area, CA, USA

Spent 4 nights, 3 days at Forresters, and it did not disappoint. Relatively easy to get to after flying into Billings, and staff were great in helping with arrangements and were waiting for us, even though we arrived late. Fishing was outstanding, 60-80 fish days every day, with many good size fish. Combination of wading and drifting was great, and much appreciated. Guide was highly experienced and we had a great time together. Accomodations were great, well appointed cabins with fantastic amenities and a great view of the river. Food was out of this world. They have a highly talented cook staff that created meals that rival those of the best restaurants in the Bay Area. No cell coverage, but good wifi coverage so worked out as great vacation with just enough outside contact to keep the trains running at home.

    Beat My Expecations - 11/20/2012
By: from Bloomfield Hills, MI, USA

I know people who stayed here before so I expected the outstanding food and service and was not disappointed. I did not expect that this would be the best fishing I have ever experienced. We hooked into 60-70 fish and landed 40-50 between the two of us our first day. I have fished many world-class rivers and never seen anything close to this. The bird hunting was a little more challenging but equally as exciting.

    Outstanding Bird Hunting - 11/13/2012
    By: from Summit, NJ

My group has hunted at Forrester's for many years. We travel extensively to hunt, and we believe that Forrester's offers the best wild bird hunting we have found in the United States. The size of the hunting area, the beauty of the terrain, the multiple species of birds hunted and the skill of the guides and dogs all add up to provide an unparalleled experience. The lodge and accommodations are comfortable, the food is nothing less than outstanding and the staff will treat you like a long lost friend. Nick and Francine have figured out a formula that will keep us coming back year after year.
