Low Tide Fly-Fishing Guide (Capt. Lucas Bissett), LA

Overview

We are a fly-fishing and light tackle full-service guide business. All trips are fished out of an 18' technical poling skiff. Louisiana offers year round sight fishing opportunities for a number of species.

Date Range

Louisiana offers year round sight fishing due to aquatic grass filled brackish water areas in the spring and summer and crystal clear cold water spots in the fall and winter.

What is Provided to Customer

We have fly rods ranging from 7- to 9-weights depending on the season as well as all leader material and flies. All flies are hand-crafted and are tied specifically for our region and fish. Spin gear and light tackle is also provided for days where conditions aren't favorable for fly fishing or if someone feels more comfortable using that equipment. We also provide lunch for our customers as well as bottled water. We supply sunscreen, bug spray, and basic toiletries.

Region/Terrain Where You Fish

We fish out of the Hopedale and Delacroix areas which are both located a short distance to the southeast of New Orleans.

Typical Weather by Season

Spring and fall offer very comfortable temperatures and relatively predictable weather. In the spring, winds can be strong, but sunshine is abundant. Fall offers mild temperatures as well as calm winds. Summer here in Louisiana can be hot and muggy, but an early start allows us to beat the heat. Wintertime fishing is our busiest time of year due to our mild, cold months and opportunities at giant redfish and black drum!

Itinerary

Sample of Typical Itinerary

Our morning starts when I pick up my clients from their hotel. We make a short drive to a local diner and grab breakfast and a lunch to go. We normally get on the water sometime between 7:30 and 8am. Spring and summer months mean short runs to our spots because we fish the interior marsh in search of resident redfish and sheepshead. Fall and winter months, we take a little longer boat ride in search of giant redfish, black drum, sheepshead and the occasional speckled trout which all reside on the exterior of our marshes. Louisiana has been dubbed the “redfish capital of the world” and for good reason. Our clients should have many opportunities at hungry fish that don’t feel the pressure of heavily fished areas.

Species

Species You Fish for by Season

Redfish aka red drum and sheepshead are abundant year round. Winter months boast bigger reds, black drum, sheepshead, and the occasional speckled trout.

Gear

What Should Customers Bring?

A good pair of polarized sunglasses is essential for sight fishing. I have found in my years of fishing that amber lenses work best, but any color works as long as they are polarized. A hat that keeps the sun out of your face is very important, too. Customers should always dress according to the time of year. Summer months can be very hot and having breathable clothing is a must. Winter time can be cold and humid and having layers that block the wind not only on the boat ride, but while fishing as well can make the trip far more comfortable.
