Region/Terrain Where You Fish

Fish and explore the beautiful salt marshes, beaches, and sand flats of the Essex River which originates in the town of Essex, MA. Essex is on the North Shore of Boston and is approximately 45 minutes from Boston and Logan International Airport. Historic Essex is known for its beautiful salt marshes and its many antique shops and fine restaurants. Once a busy shipbuilding center for wooden boats, Essex is home to the Essex Shipbuilding Museum, and is currently enjoying a revival of the art of wooden shipbuilding. Crane Beach and Hog Island (where the Hollywood film “The Crucible” was filmed) are just a few minutes by boat from the marina. Whether trying your skills at fishing for striped bass or bluefish, or just exploring the salt marshes and beaches, you will be awed by the beauty of the setting.

You will fish aboard the Kingfisher, a 20-foot Lund Alaskan center console, powered by a quiet 90 HP Suzuki four-stroke outboard. This shallow-draft boat will allow you to fish the salt marshes and sand flats of the Essex River and Crane Beach. This seaworthy craft will also allow you to fish and explore the coastal waters of Cape Ann and Plum Island. The boat is equipped with a GPS, VHS marine radio, depth sounder, cellular phone, and safety equipment.

Typical Weather by Season

The fishing season runs from May through September. Fishing in May can be cool, but as the season progresses into June, July, and August, the air temperature warms up nicely. September can bring with it some cool weather once again. The biggest limiting factor in saltwater fishing is wind, and there are days when fly-fishing can be very difficult if impossible. When this is the case, light spin tackle is available for anglers to use.

Itinerary

Sample of Typical Itinerary

Capt. Kalil is in touch with anglers before the day of the charter through emails and phone calls. Anglers meet at Perkins Marina where Capt. Kalil’s boat, the Kingfisher, is located. The marina is located at 82 Main Street (Route 133), Essex, MA 01929. After a safety check and an understanding of the boat and how to operate it, anglers settle in with coffee and pastries as they head down river.

Once out of the marina area, an explanation of the equipment and its use is given. Casting advice is given especially when Depth Charge line is being used. The type of retrieve for each type of fly is reviewed and anglers are given a chance to try out the equipment they will use prior to actually fishing.

Half-day charters last 6 hours and sometimes run longer if the fishing is good. Full-day charters are also available.
