A typical day fishing with Bucking Rainbow Outfitters starts out with our Orvis-endorsed guides picking up your party at your local accommodations or meeting at our shop in the heart of downtown Steamboat Springs. Most trips begin between 7 am and 8am during the summer months for both full day and half day trips. Upon your arrival at the shop, you will sign a liability waiver, order lunch (full day only), be fitted for waders and boots, and purchase a fishing license if needed.
After being transported to the river, the guide will provide the instruction needed to improve your fishing knowledge. Some common instruction includes casting, presentation, mending, how to fight fish, entomology of flies, proper rigging of equipment and tying knots. After fishing, your guide will take you back to the shop or your local accommodations.
Full day guided trips = 7 hours on the water with lunch.
Half day trips= 4 hours (lunch can be provided at an additional cost).
Bucking Rainbow Outfitters provides clients with all of the fishing gear necessary for a fly fishing trip. Included in our full and half day packages are: Orvis breathable waders and boots, Orvis 5wt or 6wt rods and reels outfitted with WF floating lines and all terminal tackle (leader, tippets, flies, etc). If you prefer to use your own gear, feel free to bring it and our guides will help with rigging.
Clients should bring a hat, sunglasses, sun block and a valid driver’s license to issue a fishing license if needed. A valid social security number is necessary to issue a fishing license in the State of Colorado.

Perfect day in Colorado -
By: KyFlyguy from Kentucky
I received a special gift from my wife ...to flyfish in the Steamboat Springs area of Colorado with a guide. I knew the area would be beautiful but knew nothing about the guide. Guide Matt Bingman of Bucking Rainbow picked Carl, my son-in-law, and I up early in the morning, outfitted us and we left for a day of flyfishing. We could not have had a better guide. Matt's knowledge of the river, patience in educating/instructing when questions when asked and his obvious love of flyfishing helped made the day a very special one. Carl, a flyfishing novice walked away from the stream having caught trout as well as a very large "white." I walked away with a beautiful trout and new flyfishing techniques I can use on future fishing trips. We would like to thank Matt and strongly recommend him. He's a great addition to a perfect day of fishing.
Great Experience/Very Accomodating -
By: perkinss from Vermont
John (owner) and Keith (guide) were awesome. Unfortunately we hadn't planned as far in advance as we normally would and the guys at Bucking Rainbow pulled together an awesome experience last minute. Great people. Great fishing. Very accommodating. First rate. Highly recommend.
Amazing Day! -

The entire process from the first contact with the shop to the end of our day fishing was great. All questions and concerns were taken care of in advance and our day fishing went off without a problem. We had a party of three of which two were beginners. Our guide was helpful and patient and everyone caught fish. My day in particular was amazing seven fish total the smallest being 18" and largest 25"!
Great First Time Experience -
By: Smalley3 from Steamboat Springs, CO 80487, USA
My brother-in-law (first timer), father (novice) and I (experienced) booked a trip through BRO. Our guide was Matt Bingman and he took us to Sarvis Creek. Even though it was a public water, we only saw one fisherman the whole day. I know from previous experience that its hard to guide three people, but Matt did an excellent job and got us all into multiple fish. Not only did we all catch fish, but 4 were rainbows all over 18" inches. Not bad for some beginners. Thanks Matt!
Great experience! -

My wife, Mindy, and I have booked many trips through BRO over the years, including white water rafting through Cross Mountain Canyon in the summer and fly fishing the Yampa in winter. Every trip has been expertly and professionally executed by BRO! This years fly fishing experience (our 8th year in a row) was no exception. Once again, we requested Mike Gould to be our guide. His experience and knowledge is shown in the results, as my wife and I each regularly catch 8-10 beautiful trout and sometimes more! He is patient, personable, knowledgeable, and a fun person to be with. He has a great love of the outdoors, is very knowledgeable of the whole area, and obviously loves his job! The trip is more than just stepping into the water and fishing. There is a scenic snowmobile ride along the river to get to the fishing area. All in all, a fantastic experience! THANKS, MIKE! See ya next year!
Best Fly Fishing Experience -

Michael Gould was an outstanding guide for our fly fishing trip. He was responsible, extremely knowledge and made every effort to help us catch fish. He even took orders for lunch and brought snacks, water, and gloves. Being a first time fly fisher, I learned quickly with instruction and was surprised at how making changes suggested by the guide can really make a difference. His focus on teaching technique and attentiveness to swimming fish made the learning process feel easy and fun! If you want to catch fish, have good conversation, and learn how to fly fish properly, I highly recommend Mike Gould. You'll love his personality.
Great experiance. have fished for years and enjoyed every moment. Michael was a pleasant and a great fishing guild.
Amazing Fly Fishing -
By: Flyfishgirls640 from Red Bank, NJ, USA
We were walking around downtown Steamboat Springs and stumbled upon the Bucking Rainbow shop. We had no idea that fly fishing in the winter was available. We wanted a break from skiing and booked a 1/2 day of fly fishing. The Bucking Rainbow set us up with Keith Mikkelson and we had an amazing day. It was only our second time fly fishing and could not have asked for a more patient guide. Keith was also very well versed in what was going on in the surrounding area as far as animal movement etc. which made our experience that much better. We caught a bunch of beautiful trout nad had a great time in the process. Overall, we had a great time with Keith and will absoultely do it again the next time we are in Steamboat Springs.
Sweet Winter Excursion -
By: CleeDizl from Issaquah, WA
Went to Steamboat for a skiing trip and decided to take one day off to check out the Yampa. I thought I would just fish the stretch around town. Instead, I ended up spending a fantastic afternoon with Mike Gould. It was a chilly but sunny January day. We snowmachined up to Sarvis Creek and worked about a mile and a half of river. Mike knows every rock, hole, and fish in this river! We caught fish all day in the 10-18" range. We landed ~15 fish and would have brought in at least 2 in the 20" range if I hadn't LDR'd 'em. I highly recommend both the Yampa and Mike; you are guaranteed to have a killer day.
Fishing the Stagecoach Tail Water -

Mike Gould from Buckingrainbow Outfitters is the ultimate fishing guide. As a 70 year fly fishing veteran fishing with my friend who is a beginner, Mike spent the necessary time with each of us as needed to make our experience the absolute best. Winter dry fly fishing is the ultimate, snowmobiling to our spot on the river, spending a glorious four hours catching beautiful "bows" from 1-2.5lbs does not get any better! Thanks Mike for a super experience!!!!!
