The San Juan River fishes good year around, the water temperature is the same all seasons. Navajo Lake is seasonal, April thru October.
San Juan River and Navajo Lake, NM.
Northern New Mexico is one of the sunniest places in the United States. Most days are beautiful year around. The Spring can be windy in the afternoon with temperatures in the 60's. Summer is warm, average temperatures are 80's and 90's. The Fall is beautiful with temp's in the 60's. The San Juan is also a great winter fishery with average temps in the 40's.
Fishead's provides everything you need on our fishing trips other than waders which we rent for $20 a day and your fishing license which is $17 for one day.
Appropriate clothing and a hat, sunscreen, polarized glasses and a camera.
Our most common trip is three nights of lodging with two days of fishing. A typical day of fishing starts with breakfast in the Back Cast Café. You then head to the river with your guide and fish for the day. Then back to the lodge to tell lies over dinner.
Rainbow and brown trout all year around. In Navajo Lake we fish for Carp, Pike and Smallmouth Bass, with both spinning and fly gear.
Our Orvis fly shop sits in the middle of our restaurant, The Back Cast Café, and has everything you need to fish this famous tail water.

The stories are true. -

One of the best fly fishing experiences out there. I have fly fished across the lower 48, Alaska, and British Columbia. Dollar for dollar, Fisheads offers a great value, and an incredible amount of large quality fish per mile. Our guide, Marcus, made the trip all that it could be. Can not say enough about his work ethic, personality, and knowledge of the river. The lodge is nothing fancy, but clean and comfortable. Good food and professional. The ultimate tailwater experience.
Fantastic fly trips -

Just wanted to drop a quick note to say no better fly fishing trip available anywhere. I have been fishing at the San Juan for 30 years and have never had better trips than the last few years with Fisheads. I have been staying with Fisheads the last 5 years and have now started using their guide service regularly on my trips. I have learned more about the river the last few years than I ever would have learned on my own, which means better trips every time. Last November we had a 90 fish boated day while fishing with Marcus followed by a 45 fish day wading with him. In May while fishing with owner /operator Chris, we had a 100 fish boated day. We generally catch above 30 fish per day and sometimes when hitting it right, we have a out of this world day. These fish range from a few small (6-10") and go into the mid twenties averaging (16-18"). Now with Fisheads starting to update the rooms it will only get more enjoyable each trip. Thanks Fisheads for another wonderful fishing trip and look forward to my next.
Fisheads is Prime Time for Fly Fishing -

My latest fly fishing experience after booking with Fishead's was another winner! Chris Taylor sets the pace and professional example for all of his staff. He is a very, very hard working individual, and his passion and enthusiasm for helping customers exudes outward from the first time you meet him. He is proud to be an Orvis dealer, and explains in detail about the products he sells. I arrived at the lodge on July 24th, and left on July 31st. I mostly wade fished, but booked a float trip with guide Chris Jones for Thursday, July 30th. Chris is just another example of professional guide services that Fishead's provides. He went over safety rules, made sure everyone was aware of how to move and stand in the boat, and even quoted the Orvis handbook on certain subjects. It's nice to see professionalism like that! After we strapped on our self-inflating life vests, we set out for an enjoyable day of fishing, and we weren't disappointed. We caught several fish and had a great, relaxing fishing trip. Chris is busy updating rooms at the lodge with more lighting, more storage shelves, etc, upgraded toilets, and ceiling fans. He listens to customer feedback and responds quickly. The food was great and the portions were huge. Be sure to have a milk shake when you have a chance. They are yummy. If you're looking for a Prime Time spot for a wonderful vacation experience, I recommend Fishead's as your first pick!

This was the first time at Fisheads for my wife and I. Marcus Rubbo took us out for a guide trip. He made it a fun, educational and productive day. Will definitely recommend Fisheads and Marcus to others. We look forward to fishing with Marcus and staying at Fisheads soon again. Jack & Mary K

Marcus was a great guide as he knows the river, how to read the water and knows what flies to use. My friend and I are used to fly fishing in the Pacific Northwest, so we were not sure what fly fishing would be like in New Mexico. We knew that when going into an unknown area, there is no better way than to go with an experienced outfitter, which is why we selected Fisheads of the San Juan River. Our accommodations were well located on the San Juan River, comfortable and clean. The Back Cast Café was delicious and it was great trading tales with other fishermen who had been on the river that day as well. We would highly recommend Fisheads of the San Juan River and hope that we’ll have the opportunity to fish with them again.
Doesn't get better than this -

Service, food, fishing, rooms, and especially the guides. My fourth year year here and it just keeps getting better! Over 1,000 miles from me, but I'll keep coming back.
Best Value In Guided Fly Fishing -
By: BuffordTBuffalo from Edmond, OK
My 11 year old son and I booked a 2-day/3-night stay-and-fish with Fisheads. First, the San Juan is in a rugged and beautiful corner of New Mexico. Second, the people at Fisheads are incredibly friendly. Third, the fishing can't be beat. Fourth, the guides are great--I highly recommend our guide James "JB" Brown. Fifth, the rates are a great value for a full-service, premier guided fly fishing experience. Sixth, Fisheads even has a great restaurant--the Backcast Cafe.

Our guide Robie was fantastic, he new the river and the bugs, put us on the big fish all day long !!!! And improved our fishing techniques. The food at the lodge was exceptional and the overall experience was the best. If you haven't been to the San Juan you need to put in on top of your list and book with Fisheads for the best experience ever.

We have been going to the San Juan River fishing for many years now. We have always enjoyed the river but since Fisheads is there our stays are much more enjoyable. Chris is a great guide and his place is really nice to stay at. I highly recommend Fisheads.
Tremendous Experience on the San Juan River -
By: Rodwan from Alberta, Canada
My wife and I had a tremendous day on the river with Chris in December 2014. Chris was a great coach and highly skilled guide. We learned several new fishing techniques and rigging. Chris oversees a top quality operation, ensuring that his guests walk away with an enjoyable experience. Accommodations are well located on the San Juan River and are spacious, clean and comfortable. Meals at the Back Cast Café are delicious. Staff are friendly, efficient and customer-focused. We highly recommend Fisheads San Juan River and look forward to returning soon (only this time we will stay even longer!).
