The Ugly Bug Fly Shop is open all year. We guide fly-fishing clients year round, weather permitting. Wingshooting season is September 15 through March 31.
Our guided fly-fishing rates include the use of rods and reels; we also include leader, tippet, and flies. A lunch, waters, and sodas are also provided.
We are located in the heart of the Rocky Mountains in central Wyoming, at about 6,000 feet of elevation. We are based on the world-renowned North Platte River where we offer walk/wade and float trips on the Grey Reef, Miracle Mile, and Fremont Canyon stretches. This is a very health fishery due to our low water temperatures and tailwater environment. Casper has an international airport with regular flights from Denver, Salt Lake City, and Las Vegas. Casper is also located conveniently right off I-25 for easy access by vehicle.
The average rainfall for this area is 12.5 inches per year, and temperatures vary with seasons but we are known for mild springs and falls with warmer bright, sunny summer days. We advise that all clients bring appropriate clothing and sunglasses; we can provide nearly everything else. Water temperatures range from 33-65 degrees depending on the season.
Because of our access to private land holdings along the Grey Reef tailwater, you will be one of the first boats on the river and can enjoy all the wade fishing and solitude you need for the ultimate fly-fishing vacation. Big trout, an extended season, and low pressure from anglers make for unforgettable fishing. The private river access and eight exclusive boat ramps are a distinct advantage available only to our guests. Wyoming’s property laws don’t allow public wade fishing or boat docking adjacent to private land. Our access provides plenty of wade fishing, relaxing streamside lunches, and access to restroom facilities. We can offer just about any package you are looking for on your adventure, whether it is a single day on the water or multiple days.
Wild rainbows, cutthroats, and browns averaging 17 to 22 inches will keep anglers smiling. The combination of size and numbers of fish make it one of the top destinations in the continental United States. Not to mention, there is always the chance to catch a fish of a lifetime weighing in at more than 10 pounds.
We experience a wide range of hatches throughout the year. Midges (year -round), BWOs (April, May, June, September, October), PMDs (June, July, August, September), and yellow sallies (July, August). The North Platte is known for its nymph fishing, streamer fishing, and some dry-fly fishing.
Lunch will be provided streamside on day-long guided trips.
For any other items you need, Casper has large chain stores such as Walmart, Walgreens, Target, and grocery stores.
Your camera, preferably in a water-resistant case. You'll want to be ready to submit your trip photos to the “brag board” contest when you return home.
Any medications you take regularly.
We offer a full-service fly shop with a complete range of equipment, flies, and fly-tying material.
Q. What months offer the best fishing in your area?
A. March through October are considered our best months. We do, however, offer guided fishing trips all year long. The winter fly fishing is some of the best in the lower 48; during the winter months there are very few people on the water. We also offer a discounted rate for these months if you are interested.
Q. What kind of weather should I be prepared for?
A. Casper's elevation is 5,200 feet above sea level. At this elevation the sun is intense and weather can change quickly. Be prepared for a range of temperatures and conditions. Layers work best so you can adjust to changing conditions.
Q. How do gratuities work?
A. Gratuities are not included or expected, but certainly appreciated. The average gratuity for our fishing guides is $50 per person, per day.

Great Day on the Water -
By: Tunes49 from Fort Collins, CO, USA
As a retirement gift my company treated my wife and myself to a day on Grey Reef with guide Ty Hallock from Crazy Rainbow. The trip was awesome and eventhough I have been on guided trips before this was by far the best. We were on fish quickly and Ty really new the river and made changes as needed. He was especially helpful to my wife who is inexperienced. She caught lots of great Grey Reef hogs! I'll be back!
Another wonderful year with Crazy Rainbow -

It's been another great year with Crazy Rainbow on the North Platte. We have been fishing with Ty, Blake and the crew for over 10 consecutive years and approximately twenty five trips. I cannot say enough about the professionalism, expertise and thoughtfulness of every team member. Starting with the Ugly Bug Fly Shop in Casper and shared with the all of the guides at Crazy Rainbow. Without a doubt my expectations are always exceeded as these guides know how to fish, will put you on fish repeatedly and share one of life's greatest experiences with each visit to the Platte. Two Thumbs Up again and again! Thanks again Ty for all of your efforts even in 40 mph winds.

Ty Hallack; always gives the most on the best river in the West. He works harder to put you on more fish than any guide I've ever had. Fabulous Sept. Cletus 99
Lots of fish every time -
By: Sheets from Gillette, WY
We started out as a small group of guys and now we have a dozen people that show up every year for our annual trip. The lodge is fantastic and the prices are excellent. However the best part is the fishing. Everyone in our group lands countless fish and has a great time with their guides. As a matter of fact everyone stakes claim to the same guide for the second day. We are on our third trip already booked for 2016 and there are plans for years to come. We have anglers from beginner to relative expert on our trips and everyone has a blast!
Excellent trip and services -

Howdy All, I can not recommend the Crazy Rainbow enough! They are second to none when it comes to catching a lot of fish, helping you read a river, and catering to their client to help them just relax and enjoy a get-away! The Lodge is very enjoyable and has every amenity any person would need- from a wine fridge to wonderful food to satellite TV to enjoy a movie or your favorite football game after a long day on the river. Many thanks to Ty and Mac!
had an awesome time hunting with Jessie. Went hunting both days and each day was incredible. He was very knowledgeable, the dogs were great, and we all had a fantastic time. We'll definitely be back.

Great Pheasant Hunt -

My brothers and I took my dad for his 60th for a wing shoot. We had a lot of action and the guide, Jesse, and his dogs were awesome. We had such a great time. This place is really top notch and they run a first class operation. We went for pheasant, and I think next time we'd try chucker. We picked up a couple stray chucker nonetheless. This place is great.
Awesome time -
Went hunting twice with Jessie and had a literal blast. Dogs were amazing, and his knowledge was outstanding. Fishing guides were great even though the weather didn't cooperate as it was very windy.
