We are the only Orvis-Endorsed Guide service in the Vail Valley and a two-time winner of the Orvis-Endorsed Outfitter of the Year award. Our passion is connecting people with nature through fly fishing. We provide every client with a top-notch experience. Whether they are a first-time angler or have been fishing for years, we will match them with a professional guide and guarantee a safe and fun day on the river. Our guides have over 250 years combined experience on local waters. We are also home to the Orvis two-day Fly-Fishing School at the lodge and spa at Cordillera.

Date Range

We offer full-time year-round guide service.

What is Provided to Customer

Our trip pricing is all-inclusive: rods/reels, flies, transportation. A Colorado fishing license starts at $9 first day, $5 each additional day. All you need is a hat, sunglasses, and a smile.

Region/Terrain Where You Fish

We are permitted on the Colorado, Eagle, and Roaring Fork Rivers and their tributaries, as well as many small streams and stillwaters. We wade and float for rainbow, brown, and cutthroat trout. We also have a fully outfitted bass boat for larger stillwaters that have northern pike and bass.

Typical Weather by Season

We fish year-round in the Vail Valley. Being in a high alpine desert elevation means that we have the ability to move down valley or up valley depending on temperatures. Colorado is known for its microclimates. Even during winter we are able to float and wade many of our rivers. Summer climates in the mountains range from mid-80s in the day to low 50s in the evenings. The winter climate can range from the 30s-40s in the daytime depending on what elevation we fish. Spring offers fantastic weather and great fishing opportunities that complement a day on the mountain.

Sample of Typical Itinerary

Typically half-day trips consist of 4 hours of fishing, either wading or floating. Full days range from 8 to 12 hours wading or floating depending on where we fish. Full-day trips include a catered streamside lunch. Our guides are very flexible in putting together a trip to meet the expectations of our guests.

Species You Fish for by Season

Rainbow, browns, and cutthroat trout are caught year around. Bass and pike during the summer months. Our rivers are known for their diverse insect hatches: midges, mayflies, stoneflies (including the Colorado River salmonfly hatch in June), and a serious caddis hatch as well.

What Should Customers Bring?

Hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a rain jacket. We will take care of the rest.

    Best 2 Days Ever - 9/3/2015
    By: from Los Angeles, CA

Jeff from Fly Fishing Outfitters was an amazing teacher and guide. We spent two days together and I was lucky enough to get one:one instruction. He was super patient with my skills and I left my time there feeling like I had learned alot. I know it was a great 12 year old saw me in the front seat of the car today as we were sitting at a stoplight back in the city. I heard Jeff's tips in my mind and was flicking my wrist back and if I was throwing a fly. I looked in the rear view mirror and smiled when she caught me and asked "what are you doing dad? practicing your fly fishing?" And I quickly answered "of course" and thought of Jeff. Thanks for a great one!

Consistent High Quality Service - 8/26/2015
    By: from Scarsdale, NY, USA

I have used guides at Fly Fishing Outfitters to wade fish on the Eagle River on a regular basis (i.e., 15-20 times a year) for the last 5 years. Their guides have always been terrific. I started out as a rank beginner and have now progressed, through their patient instruction, to the point where I am now reasonably self-sufficient. Matt Lewis (“Lew”) has been particularly helpful. He has a great skill set, is an expert instructor, and is a really good fun-loving guy to fish with. Not surprisingly, we always catch lots of fish whenever we go out. The guys in the shop are also very friendly and have always been extremely helpful.

    Great trip - 8/26/2015
    By: from Avon, CO, USA

I could not be happier with the service and the experience. I took my son who had never fly fished before and the staff brought him in the day before and gave him lessons in the parking lot so he would be ready when we hit the water. My son had an awesome day fishing and our guide JB was great to work with. He knew the river and kept us in the fish all day. I give the staff a 10+ for making this a great trip!

We took our two young boys, ages 8 and 9, for their first fly fishing trip. The guides were patient and fun and we even went back for a second trip!!! Did a walk and wade first and then planned a boat trip. Jason and Fletch were great with our kids.
