The Ranch, sitting on the western slope of the Colorado Rockies, is in high desert and temperatures can be comfortably in the high 70's in September. Many later fall days will be in the slightly cool 50's range, and heading into December the temps can drop into the lower 40's when you'll definitely need a jacket. There is minimal rainfall during these months, although from late October to February there is always a chance of a light dusting of snow.

Any sporting enthusiast will find a tremendous number of activities at The High Lonesome Ranch. Among the most coveted of endorsements is the Double Orvis Endorsed Lodge for fly-fishing and for wingshooting. The High Lonesome Ranch is one of the few venues to be awarded such a dual distinction. Sporting activities include fly-fishing, wingshooting, big game hunting, equestrian adventures, mountain biking, hiking, birding, science activities, and more.
In addition to wingshooting for 5 species of upland game birds and fly-fishing for five species of trout, guests have many activities from which to choose. One of our specialties is our equestrian program. We also offer Dude Ranch weeks, so we’re well equipped for all the ways to use a horse – including driving cattle, equestrian geocaching, lassoing and branding cattle. Birding is one of our most popular activities since our range in elevation offers many excellent opportunities to see birds from multiple ecosystems. Mountain biking, wildlife viewing – especially wild horses who are descendants of Native American and Spanish horses brought to this land many years ago. You’ll find black bears, elk, mule deer, eagles, mountain lions, and even moose, antelope or the occasional big horn sheep. The list of activities goes on: Science Activities, Ecotourism, Hiking, Yoga, Massage, Cooking Classes, and Kids’ Activities.
Just a short drive away are winery tours, golfing, the famous Glenwood Hot Springs, Powderhorn for winter sports, and white water rafting.
Accommodations are elegantly western, all new and range from deluxe master suites to guest rooms with private baths. Choices include guest houses, private cabins, and even glamorous Out-of-Africa-style tents. A typical lodge choice will have a full kitchen, screened reading porch, great room and recreation room with a gaming table, western antiques, flat-screen satellite TV, DVD player, WiFi, a stone fireplace and pool table. Every choice is more than comfortable and could be described as luxurious.
Meals are events at The High Lonesome Ranch. Our Executive Chef, Jordan Asher practices a farm-to-table philosophy, uses homegrown and locally produced ingredients, as well as our own High Lonesome Angus beef aged on the ranch. Chef Asher’s meals are truly inspired and will wow your taste buds as well as your imagination. The famous Aunt Linda Doden prepares hearty breakfasts every day and it is all home made, from the bread that she makes her French toast from to her secret recipe granola. Most days you’ll be offered eggs, potatoes of one kind or another, omelets, bacon, sausage, homemade biscuits and gravy, along with homemade jams and jellies, fresh berries in season and fruits from our own orchards.
