Species

Species You Fish for by Season

Within an hour’s drive of Fernie, fly fishers can fish for brown, bull, cutthroat, and rainbow trout. Anglers can expect off-the-charts dry-fly fishing for most species, with the exception of bull trout, which can be targeted by fishing streamers.

From late June into July, the golden stonefly and green drake hatches are the focus of the early season fishing. As the season progresses pale morning duns, caddisflies, and yellow and lime sallies are the mainstays of the dry-fly fishing. From late July into September, the terrestrial fishing picks up, along with hatches of flavilinea, October caddis, and blue-winged olives. Besides the outstanding dry-fly fishing that the area is renowned for, nymphing and streamer fishing can also be productive.

Fantastic Fishing in Fernie - 3/15/2015
    By: from Fernie, BC, Canada

My wife and I spent a week in Fernie and loved every minute of it! The quaint mountain town couldn't have been more relaxing while still providing plenty of opportunity to explore. Dave Brown Outfitters accommodated our every need when it came to getting on the local waters for some unbelievable fishing. Dave and his guides not only put us on great water, scenery and fish, but made it fun and easy. I would recommend this trip to anyone looking to find a place they will want to visit again and again and again...

    Love this place ! - 9/26/2014
    By: from Chicago

I have been fishing the Elk River in Fernie for ten years, first with fishing buddies, lately with our wives. The fishing is outstanding. Mainly dry flies, often to rising fish. We usually spend a day walking a small creek, targeting cutthroats approaching 20" with small (#16-18) dries. The floats are always productive. The Elk is beautiful, and full of hungry trout looking up! Dave Brown Outfitters is the guide service to use, no question. I've fished with several of their guides, all top notch professionals. Andres Gonzalez, in particular, is a gifted fishing guide and great companion. I couldn't recommend this trip more strongly.

Great Day on the Bow - 7/29/2014
By: from Bow, Calgary, AB, Canada

I recently fished the Bow River with Dave Brown Outfitters. My guide worked hard to put me on fish all day long. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them and can't wait to return and fish with Mike Turnbull again.

    B.C.'s Mangroves - 7/18/2014
    By: from Chandler, AZ

Dave Brown outfitters is a professional and capable outfitter! Our guide Chris was a great facilitator of fun, education and (of course) fishing. We spent a majority of the day casting to hard fighting rising red stripes in the flooded willows (aka BC Mangroves). I think this was the first time I have ever had to tell a guide that it's getting late and we need to get back to the hotel. I'm pretty sure Chris would have let us fish till midnight if we were up for it. Thanks again for the memories and the great shore lunch!

    By: from Chicago,IL, USA

On Sept 17 my wife & I drifted the Elk R. with D.Brown guide, Greg Leech. The most gorgeous of settings. We boated more than 20 cutts' on drys.Greg was extremely competent & companionable. Both my wife & I were still complementing Greg last night during dinner with friends. On Sept 18, I sight fished a mountain lake for monster rainbows with guide Andres Gonzalez, again, from D.Brown&Co. And, again, the high professionalism and fine companionship of Andres led this time to the hooking and boating of a 25" rainbow on a 4x tippet & 5 wt. rod. Wonderful fight & wonderful day. Thanx D.Brown&Co. for a memorable visit to Fernie BC.

Have taken colleagues on a number of trips with Dave Brown Outfitters. Always the best of times. This July, two of us floated the Waterton River. Had floated it in prior years with another group - way better with Dave Brown. Scenery excellent, as was technical assistance, and professionalism. Highly recommend Dave Brown Outfitters...

    Wife had fun - 9/19/2012
    By: from Weatherford, TX, USA

I fished and my wife road for two wonderful days on the Elk River with Dave and Andres from Dave Brown Outfitters. We stayed above the fly shop and had a great time. I went to dry fly fish and was treated to two of the best days I have ever experienced. I caught a lot of beautiful Cuts and netted one Bull Trout that went 20 inches. My wife had a great time riding and they treated her like a quenn. I came away from the experience with a lot of helpful hints on techniques. Some of the prettiest water I have ever seen. Thanks Dave and Andres.
