The Missouri River Ranch is located just outside of Craig, Montana. Craig is located in the central part of Montana, 40 miles north of Helena, MT and 50 miles south of Great Falls, MT. This portion of the Missouri River is one of the most scenic in the state. The first 14 miles starting at Holter Dam is comprised of gently sloping hills and low lying pasture land. From mile 14 to mile 24 the river winds its way through canyons and mountainous regions. The last 12 miles of the float are typical high plains of eastern Montana.
January to March, temperatures average from highs of 35 to lows of 15; April to June, temperatures average from highs of 65 to lows of 38; July to September, temperatures average from highs of 85 to lows of 55; and October to December temperatures range from highs of 55 to lows of 30. These are averages, temperatures during the year can be as low as 20 below zero and as high as 110. This is a very dry area with an average rainfall of 15 per year.
Guests usually arrive midafternoon, after checking in and getting settled, they fish from our private shoreline until dinner time. The second day would be a float from Holter Dam to the Craig Bridge. The third day would be Craig Bridge to Pelican Point with the last full day of floating from Pelican Point to Cascade. The fifth and final day is normally more relaxing starting with a leisurely breakfast, possible mid-morning fishing on our 1.3 miles of private river bank and checking out at 11AM. With the new renovations, the ranch now has eight guest suites, with a total of 14 king and queen beds. Every room has its own private bath, with one room being designed to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act “ADA”. Rooms 1 through 4 each have their own private veranda providing privacy while viewing the river and surrounding mountains. Rooms 5 through 8 each have over 600 sq. ft. of living space and share a 1300 sq. ft. cedar deck which is great for watching osprey, geese, eagles, and pelicans.
Rainbow and brown trout are abundant year round. The 2011 Montana Fish Wildlife & Parks fish count was over 6,000 fish per mile from Holter Dam to Craig.
Depending on what time of year, the guest will need to pack the appropriate outerwear. If the guest is fishing with a guide, the guide will provide the necessary rods, reels, flies and any other associated equipment. Most guides do not provide clothing or waders.
Meal preferences: Prior to each guests stay, allergies, dietary restrictions and preferences are discussed.
Tipping: Tips are shared equally among our staff and on average are 10% of total bill.
Spirits: Premium spirits are available at an additional charge and should be requested in advance.
Shuttle Service: Transportation is available from both Great Falls and Helena airports for an additional fee.
Booking a Trip: We require a 50% non-refundable deposit at the time of booking which can be paid by check or credit card.
Cancellation Policy: A 50% deposit is required to secure your reservation. Refunds are not issued for stays shorter than the original reservation. If you notify us of a change in your plans at least 30 days prior to your scheduled arrival date, then your deposit can be applied to new dates during the same calendar year only and subject to availability. Without 30 days notification, deposits are completely forfeited.
