Vintage Bison Leather Baseball

Enjoy the old-time fun of America's game with this vintage leather baseball.

Details

Lemon-peel baseballs, characterized by their one-piece leather construction, were used throughout the 19th century until the 1870s, when the two-piece, figure-8-stitched ball became the standard. This reproduction ball (an Orvis exclusive) is handstitched using the same genuine bison leather that's used in our exclusive Nokona glove (item 6A1A). Suitable for outdoor play. In brown. Made in USA.

Shipped to contiguous 48 states & HI only.

I bought two baseballs. One for my collection and my friend. I added this ball to my collection because it is part of history of baseball. The specs are to actual size weight. Truly a quality, collectable ball.

    Great ball - 3/12/2014

Bison leather old-style baseball? Americanisimo! Just got mine and it's very well made, the stitches are dense and well placed. It would take a wallop to tear the cover off like in the old days. NOTE: it's noticeably smaller softer and lighter than today's baseballs, but for those who play this is still playable. I'd say 80-85% diameter, 70% weight, 50-60% hardness of a standard major league baseball. The stitches are pretty flush except for the lovely 'imperfections' at the points where it all comes together. I'm planning on using it for visiting Italian in laws and friends on their first trip to the US, with wood bats in a friendly game of sandlot ball. It should be less intimidating for them since it's softer, no way to get a line drive from this to the temple and really get more than dazed. Goes great with the glove!

    Bison Baseball - 3/5/2014

I purchased this for one of my best friends. He played semi-pro baseball for 10-15 years after college. He is a bona fide baseball historian and was amazed when he opened the package. If you know of a baseball fan that truly loves the game then this is a gift they will really appreciate.

    Unique Craftsmanship - 1/29/2014

This is a unique baseball and would make a great gift for any sports fan. I have a football made by the same guy in NJ. These balls are all hand made and the craftsmanship is outstanding. When you receive the ball, it looks like it should be put on a mantle for display. But these balls are made to be used and they only get better with use.

It's very cool and durable. A little smaller than a regular baseball but that's fine. It looks great on my shelf.

It is nice to actually feel the size of this ball! I don't know how you could control it by pitching the ball. I know that this is "back-in-the-day" I am sure the new baseball was readily accepted by the players! It is a very good conversation piece!
