This subsurface bucktail pattern was originally designed for bass in the lakes of southern Florida, but was quickly co-opted for chasing tarpon, snook, and redfish. Fly casting instructor Joe Mahler set out to tie a pattern that would offer the action of a wounded minnow and a reasonable sink rate, and succeeded on both counts with this baitfish imitation. The Straw Boss it at its best when fished slowly, and strikes often occur when the fly is dropping in a lazy, back-and-forth tilting motion caused by the winged design. When stripped heartily, it displaces an impressive amount of water, reminiscent of a swimming frog or finger mullet.
