The earliest hooked rugs of colonial America were first made out of necessity, since carpets from Europe and Asia were unaffordable to the colonialists. Hooked rugs were not just a practical floor covering, but often made of colorful scraps of cloth in unique, artful designs that depicted domestic scenes. In the mid-1800s, Jute burlap, used in shipping in the mid-1800s, became widely used for the backing of rugs. Women of the house used metal or whale bone hooks to pull the scraps through the burlap. A blend of rugged and fine cloth scraps created varied texture and coloration. The “rugs” were actually first used as bed coverings and blankets to keep people warm on the cold New England nights. This is a great rug! I am using it indoors since I have children and pets and this is very easy to keep clean. Plus the colors go beautifully in my kitchen.

I use this as an inside rug where the dog comes in. It traps the debris and easy to vacuum or hose off. And the best part is and, the reason I purchased it was so it wouldn't slide around. And it doesn't!!! I am going to buy another for my front door out side. It is very pretty.

We dont have a mud room, and we dont have a porch to clean boots and shoes before coming in the house. This rug is perfect for right inside the door when we walk inside with dirt shoes and a wet dog. It has saved our wood floors a lot this winter.
