The Story

There has been a long and historically successful line of Battenkill reels through Orvis history. Simple, trouble free, and easily accessible in price-the ultimate in function and simplicity throughout the years. Welcome to the powerful, technologically advanced, and yet still accessible new generation of Battenkill reels. This latest Battenkill Disc version is true to its heritage in looks and performance, but updated with the latest in design improvements and a significantly more powerful drag. The porting and finish pay unmistakable homage to the Battenkills of the past, but this reel incorporates our best-selling mid-arbor design. Underneath that mid arbor is the same sealed drag system found in the Hydros SL incorporating six interacting carbon and stainless drag surfaces. Positive click drag is simple and easy to adjust. The reel is built of 6061-T6 aircraft aluminum with an ergonomic Delrin handle and changing from left to right hand retrieve is simple. In black nickel.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from As good as it gets especially for its price This reel is solid, feels great, and most importantly reliable. The gear itself is quite smooth along with the disc drag/braking system. This real has proven to be one of the most reliable reels that I can take anywhere. I use it for my 7wt, 9' rod and it pairs up quite beautifuly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Value! I have a 35 year old Far and Fine Rod with an original Battenkill click & pawl reel. Now that I am retired I am fishing locally and have gone back to using this rod (the first I ever owned) but felt that the reel needed an upgrade. I purchased this reel (a direct descendant of the original). It is a beautiful reel. I love the mid arbor and the disc drag is unbelievable for a reel at this price. I have been out with it several times and couldnt be happier!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great value and quality! This is my second Battenkill Disc reel of this generation (I have a couple of the first ones, as well) and it is by far the best value in quality reels out there. It offers a very smooth, strong drag system that has protected light tippets with 20+" trout. The III size is the perfect balance for my 10' 3 wt. Recon (which is an absolutely fabulous rod in it's own right) and can be fished all day with no fatigue that can sometimes happen with a tip-heavy rod.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from dependable and robust I just returned from a Missouri trout fishing trip. With this s3 wt reel and a 3 wt rod I netted 20 rainbow trout averaging 4 pounds with 6 6-7 pounders. Reel and Drag worked perfect on this trip. Great Reel

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect Reel for small streams Got this to go with my 10 foot 3 weight setup, but would be great for any setup for small stream fishing. Caught some nice rainbows tight lining.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quality Reel I plan on using the BBS IV for salmon and steelhead fishing I currently use a BBS III for trout and landlocked salmon. They are great reels for the money.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love Orvis, and you will too. I love Orvis rods and reels. I own three Orvis reels and rods, and wouldn't trade any one of them. When a big trout takes your fly, you don't have to worry, your equipment is going to hold up, and your gonna land that big one. Well, sometimes the big one does get away, but it's not because of your equipment, it' because the big ones are probably smarter than I am. Steelhead, they very seldom get away, it's those big rainbows and browns that seam to get away, and for me, the big ones that get away, are the ones I remember most.
