The Story

Orvis—endorsed fly—fishing guide Capt. Jeff Crumpton, at Florida's Amelia Island Charter Fishing, started fishing at a young age—three, to be exact:

"I started fishing as most do, with their mom, dad, or grandparents, or friends' dads or moms. In 1978, in the Scouts troop 101, Ashland Kentucky, our scout master asked if anyone would like to get their fishing badge by learning to fly fish. This is when the fly fishing took over. Around 1992—1995, my guiding career took off and friends of friends and their business clients started calling to fish. Around 1995—1996, I was approached by the Homestead Resort to take the title of Fly— Fishing Guide and Director of Fly Fishing! Our team at The Homestead took or taught over 3000 guests to fish per year. In 2000—2001, I moved to Florida to pursue a career as a saltwater guide. I run a 2070 Lowe boat that floats shallow and runs shallow. I will pole or troll to the species you wish to pursue on fly or to photograph. I specialize in stalking redfish on fly or light tackle. I look forward to sharing a day on the water with you soon. I want your trip to be enjoyable, safe, and up to your expectations. I am a past Level 3 Ski Teacher with PSIA, and I approach teaching fly fishing with a good lesson plan to help you achieve your goals for the time spent with you."

Season:

Year-round fishing, redfish, speckle sea trout, black drum, sheepshead, whiting, flounder. Migratory fish, cobia, jack crevalle, Tarpon, Lady fish, Some of the best tailing redfish in the spartina grass is from June to end of November on the full and New moon, what we call the Flood Tides or tailing tides.

Species:

Our fishery changes with the seasons. Our year-round species are redfish with largest schools of fish in the winter to spring months, on the lower tides in the marsh and mud oyster flats. Summer and fall months, redfish will tend to be in wolf packs of 10-20 fish at low tides and scattered in and along the spartina grass at higher tides. Our other year-round fish is speckled sea trout, flounder, sheepshead, and puppy drum. We do have a migration of tarpon that usually show up around the middle of June through early November, along with sharks and jack crevalle.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Expert Redfish Finder & Fly Fishing Teacher Capt. Jeff was exceptional! I was fly fishing and my brother and dad were spin fishing. I’m more of a novice fly fisherman, but Jeff worked with me and taught me a lot about saltwater fly fishing. He’s an expert at spotting redfish and sneaking up on them. We were chasing reds through some small creeks in the marsh. Didn’t land any, but we were missing our placement and presentation due to our inexperienced. We saw at least 15 redfish during our trip and got to see belly rolls and a tailing red. We then went out to the larger channels and caught 3 sea trout and 3 flounder. We had a blast, we’d highly recommend fishing with Jeff! We can’t wait to come back and fish with him again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of the Best RedFish Guides in North Florida I have fished with Capt. Crumpton on several occasions over the years. He put me on my first Red Fish as a teenager on the fly. Jeff's knowledge of the local water is second to none. He knows his fishy neighbors. He is an expert in casting instruction and was able to give me on-sight casting advice to improve my accuracy and delivery of the fly to fish. He conducts his business with the highest level of professionalism without sacrificing the fun element we all look for while out on the water. I recommend Capt. Jeff Crumpton as the best option for all levels of anglers hoping to tie into some big bull redfish. -Graham A. Murphy R.L. Winston Pro Staff

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Perfect Orvis Experience We were visiting Amelia Island and catching fish off the beach, but I wanted to take the family out on the water. Captain Crumpton was the perfect choice. His boat and equipment were immaculate, he emphasized safety, he spent time patiently giving my wife pointers, and put us on fish. He ran down the list of potential common acquaintances - we had a few. Best of all, he improved my double haul! The highlight was watching my son land a bonnethead shark - who says teens can't smile! You wouldn't know he wasn't locally born and raised - he knew everything about the area. A great experience.
