The Story

Go fly fishing in Louisiana and enjoy the expertise of Orvis-endorsed guide Capt. Michael Leishman Jr. New Orleans has always been known for its rich cultural and historical atmosphere, but just outside of the city is home to a world-class fishery that has proved equal in notoriety. Come on down and experience all the best that The Sportsman's Paradise has to offer!

Let Orvis-endorsed guide Capt. Michael Leishman Jr. create a memorable fly-fishing excursion when you come to Louisiana: "There is a reason that so many fishermen like myself are proud to call Louisiana home. There is no better place to find great size and quantity of so many game fish species and it is obvious what makes this such a productive fishery; with the estuaries created by the Mississippi River along our Gulf Coast, so many species of bird, land, and sea life are able to enjoy a gluttonous way of life, feasting on the abundant bait and organisms present here. Take one look at the water and you will notice it is bursting with shrimp, mullet, crabs, and so many other food sources that entice a wide variety of game fish to inhabit our inshore waters."

"The outstanding fishing is just one of the reasons I am glad to be a Louisiana native, and I hope to show you just what Louisiana is all about. We have such a beautiful ecosystem here, it is easy to let go of the hustle and bustle of daily life. There are many reasons we enjoy fishing, but what keeps us coming back are the memories we make out in a beautiful place with good friends. I hope to share those good times with you!"

Season:

We enjoy a year-round fishery here in Louisiana!

Region/Terrain:

With so much coastal marsh for us to fish, it is not uncommon to go all day without seeing another boat around. There are many different species of flora and fauna across the marsh, with very few trees, and the grass is only a couple of feet tall, making for a seemingly endless view over the entire marsh.

Typical Weather:

Spring and Early Summer: March and April are historically known to be rainy and windy, but can be great fishing if we see sunny days. May and June are typically the calmest, sunniest months of the year, and the temperature is still not so hot yet. The fish are feeding abundantly this time of year.

Late Summer: July through September can bring summer showers, but we can often run around the weather and avoid it entirely. These are the hottest months of the year, but the fish are active, and fight the hardest this time of year. There is also a very wide variety of species we can target during these months.

Fall: October and November are usually the most mild months of the year. The temperature is nice, the wind can be very low and it is typically sunny. Many areas will also start to have much clearer water, making big redfish and black drum easy to find.

Winter: This season can be very cold, but big fish in clear water are commonly found this time of year. At times, there can be fronts producing windy and rainy conditions, but there are still many sunny and calm days.

There is nothing better than watching countless feisty bass breach three feet in the air for your fly!

Other:

I am currently equipped to have up to two anglers in my boat per day, however, if you have a larger group coming to fish, I will be more than happy to find reputable guides for the entire party.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Louisiana Redfish Adventure! Had an opportunity to fish Louisiana on short notice. With all the guides affiliated with our lodging booked or averse to fly fisherman I rolled the dice and logged onto the Orvis website to see if they had “endorsed” fly fishing guides listed and I’m so glad that I did. Reached out to our guide and got an immediate response and set the date. Traveling with my wife, she came along to watch me and photo any fish our guide might put me on. At the end of the day, I think she had a much fun as I did. Our guide included and encouraged her as much as he did me. I think she may well be a convert. I want to thank our guide for putting me on so many fish but also thank him for introducing fly fishing to my wife and best friend. This is something we will do together again as she loved the experience as much as I did.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic Guide Michael is an all around great guide and person. He knows the fishery like the back of his hand, and was very helpful in putting us on fish. We ran into inclement weather early in the morning, and instead of packing it in, he loaded up the boat and we switched gears and went after jacks. He's very personable and helpful. Would highly recommend anyone wanting to go to call him.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from First Class! We fished two days with Mike in early November. He is a professional and is easygoing as well. He communicated well so we were ready when the first opportunities at fish presented themselves. In two days we caught a mess of fish all on fly. We caught reds of all sizes, black drum and sheepshead. There was a lot of high-fiving go on! I highly recommend fishing with Mike. He is great at what he does.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Countless Reds Capt. Michael is a stud. Over two days he put us on so many redfish. When weather permitted we threw the fly, when rain and wind moved in we switched to traditional tackle. Both were very productive. With his expertise and knowledge he put us on fish and we outfished the guys throwing live bait.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely Amazing If you are looking for the trip of a lifetime, a guide that cares about you achieving your goal(s) during the trip, and an experience that well worth your money (one that is "priceless"), then set aside a day (or several days) to fish with Captain Michael. I've fished with Capt. Michael several times now, and I now realize why he has 15+ 5 stars reviews. He's the real deal. I promise you will not go wrong booking a trip with Capt. Michael. He's very professional, and above all, he's a great person that you'll love to spend the day with. I'd much rather spend time with a phenomenal guide and catch only a few fish, then to catch tons of fish with a guide that was just okay (maybe that's just me). However, if you're really searching for a guide that'll solely put you on the fish, then Michael is a good as any (if not the best). Not only that, but he's fun to fish with - he's a great person. It's a win win. I can't possibly recommend him enough.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A+ Experience I've spent around 10 days on the water with Michael in the last year. He is a pros, pro. He knows the water, which is so important when venturing into the vast Louisana marsh. He imparts that knowledge in a friendly and encouraging way. Michael's focus with his clients is 100% about how to make them successful. It's never about the clients making Michael look successful. I can assure you in the guide world that isn't always the case. He is patient, skillful and above all a pleasure to share the boat with. I highly recommend spending time on the water with Michael.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for beginners! A friend of mine, who is an avid fly fisherman, invited me to join him on a hunt for redfish in south Louisiana. While I've caught many reds over the years, I have never held a fly rod. Capt Mike immediately recognized my struggles during my first go at it, so he gave me a few simple tips. Thanks to Capt Mike, I landed my first red fish on a fly rod! He is a true pro that would also be good for family trips. 5 stars. Steve T.
