The Story

2010 Orvis-Endorsed Freshwater Fly-Fishing Guide of the Year. Our home is the Upper Delaware River system that forms the natural border between Pennsylvania and New York. Rated as one of the finest wild trout fisheries in the US, the Delaware system encompasses up to 80 miles of trout water that we fish by wading and driftboat. Rivers such as the East Branch, West Branch, Beaverkill, Willowemoc, Neversink, and Delaware are the birthplace of fly fishing in America. Join us for a day or more of exploring these waters. In the summer we also fly or spin fish for smallmouth bass on a section of river that has been rated in the top five smallmouth rivers. Corporate and private groups are welcome.

Date Range

Most years we're trout fishing by April 15, but when the spring comes early, we start early. Trout fishing goes through mid-October (sometimes later). Smallmouth bass fishing begins in late June and continues into October.

What is Provided to Customer

On all our trips we provide the use of any necessary tackle. On full-day trips lunch and soft drinks are provided. We always have the right flies should you not have them. Loaner waders are also available depending on sizing. But, most of all, our commitment to do the best we can for you!

Region/Terrain Where You Fish

The Upper Delaware System offers the experience of big river wild trout fishing and wade fishing in small to medium-sized water, some with the feel and technicality of a spring creek. With few exceptions, the rivers and streams are easily waded with an easy bottom and slow-to-medium currents. We fish via driftboat, wading, or driftboat and wading. It all depends on the river and water conditions.

Typical Weather by Season

The season here begins in April, where you can experience several weather changes in just one day, so layering warm clothing and rain gear is a must. As the season progresses, you'll find May to be cool in the early part to warmer later in the month, but in all instances a fleece or jacket and rain gear should be with you on the water throughout the season. You'll find summertime evenings and mornings often dropping into the 50s.

What Should Customers Bring?

On our trips and on most others, you should bring sunglasses, rain jacket, hat, sunblock, leaders, waders, fishing tackle as appropriate, light jacket/fleece, and any other personal item you'd like to have along.

Sample of Typical Itinerary

A typical day on the water is anything but typical. The only absolute we have found in fly fishing is that things change. For this reason it's best if you have a flexible start and finish time in order to take full advantage of what the fishing conditions offer. In any event, a full-day fishing trip is no less than 8 hours on the water. Having said that, here are a few expectations for an itinerary. In April plan on starting around 9am and finishing at dusk. By May the start time will probably adjust to 10am with a dusk ending and by summer you'll be looking at starting about 11 or 12. We also sometimes suggest split days (early morning and late afternoon) when conditions warrant it and it fits our client’s schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Do you provide lodging?
A. We are not in the lodging business but can arrange lodging for you if needed.

Species You Fish for by Season

In April and continuing into October the insects begin hatching and bring the on the dry-fly action. Early season fishing is drifting and often streamer fishing until any early hatches start. From late April through October the Delaware system is known for its excellent dry-fly fishing but when the fish are not on the surface we also use various nymphing techniques, wet flies, and streamers.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Another great day I've been fishing with Joe for about 15 years. His knowledge of the river and his ability to locate fish always amazes me. I've fished with many guides in different parts of the country and he is head and shoulders above them all. Always look forward to fishing with Joe.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A+ Guide Service in every way Once again we had the pleasure to fish (May 2021) with Captain Joe Demalderis of Cross Currents Guide Services in PA. We've fished with many different guides throughout America and without a doubt, Joe is one of the best guides that I've ever been around. In my opinion he is the most knowledgeable, courteous, and hardest working guide that I've ever fished with. The Delaware is one of the toughest fisheries east of the Mississippi as these native fish see hundreds, if not thousands of presentations every day. Joe's knowledge of the entire system is second to none and he puts you on native trout, when others cannot. When we fish the Upper Delaware, there is no one else that we even consider calling. The entire staff at Cross Current are fantastic. Pat in the shop will get you completely setup and is always willing to answer every question. Despite only fishing with Joe exclusively for the past nine years, the other Cross Current guides are extremely friendly and remember your name when you walk in the door, like an episode from Cheers. If you have the need to fish the best stretch of water on the east coast, I highly recommend booking a float with Joe, Marty, Anita, or John.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Zach Anderson Zach is an excellent guide. He has a deep understanding of the East, West, and main stem of the Upper Delaware. By this I mean, he understands the water and structures, he knows the complexities of the insect populations, he understands fish behaviors. All of this on the contact of seasons, temperatures, water levels and weather. The Upper Delaware is complex and your best bet at consistent success is to have a guide that is on top of it. And yeah he also likes to fish. You’ll be lucky to have Zach guide you. He’s that good.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Brad Mckeown @ Cross Current Guide Service Brad was just an all around super guide!! I picked his brain on bugs, water flow, pockets, rods and reels. He guided me for an all day walk in/ wade in on the famed Willowemac and then a drift boat on the West Branch of the Delaware. A great experience and everyone should take the time to speak with Joe at Cross Current about using his guide services and always ask for Brad Mckeown!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great time in tough conditions Luc, Thanks for showing as a great time . Conditions were tough, ( high water, few heads , wind), but your hard work , and young energy paid off with fish to net. Your wealth of knowledge and experience is amazing for your age. Thanks again. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great couple days on the Deleware with Luc Enjoyed two days fly fishing while celebrating our 5 year anniversary together Cross Current guide Luc Genovesi did a great job getting us refreshed for our first season outing and helped us on our technique and getting us into some nice fish. We really appreciated the combination of his laid back low pressure style, great attitude and experience/knowledge. Helped Margaret relax and get dialed in for both dry fly and nymph hook ups. We had as good an experience as we could hope for and look forward to our next trip.
