Upper Manistee River, Michigan Fly Fishing Reports & Conditions
My tips of the week
Above freezing temps middays this week will make fishing easier and water warmer. Some snow and colder temps next week. Parking in the "Flies Only" water is fine now with warmer temps. Euro tech style nymphing is the preferred technique, but stripping, or swinging streamers has been very successful this past week. Colder water temps require SLOW retrievals due to trout metabolisms slowing down. Trout season ended October 1, 2020 closing the water above CO612 to fishing and making the water from CO612 to CCC Bridge "Flies-Only" catch and release until the last Saturday in April, 2021. CCC to Tippy Dam Pond is open all year. You can purchase your 2020 "All Species" license and print it out on your printer or save the PDF to your phone.... Upper Manistee River Description

ENTIRE RIVER IS OPEN NOW UNTIL OCTOBER 1, 2018. "FLIES-ONLY" FROM M72 TO CCC BRIDGE.

The Upper Manistee is perhaps Michigan’s finest self-sustaining trout stream. More than 60 miles of wadeable water from its headwaters to the “flies-only” section downstream, make it truly Michigan’s most accessible fly angling water. The river is approximately thirty to sixty feet across in most stretches with ...

Techniques & Tips

Tech nymphing is the preferred technique for wading anglers. Fish the deep runs (where fish can find slow or no current on the bottom) with tunghead jig nymphs in red and purple. Riffles are also producing if stucture is present where fish can hold. Traditional nymphing techniques such as long flourocarbon leaders, very small indicators and heavily weighted nymphs like tungston jig head, or bead head nymphs with some weight 3 inches above the fly will get down deep and move some fish. Fish slowly.

7-Day Forecast

Cold overnight temps with warm middays this week. Nymph and streamer fishing from the Airport to Three Mile Landing. Midweek temps will be right around freezing making fishing much easier. Swinging and stripping streamers has been good. Colder temps and some snow next week. Go to zip code 49684 for latest weather at your favorite weather site.
