Upper Manistee River, Michigan Fly Fishing Reports & Conditions
My tips of the week
More normal winter conditions this week will allow anglers to enter the river. But, care should be given to the shelf ice that has formed over the last frigid week. Ice in the guides is a nuisance. If you want to brave the elements, it's time to use long leaders, tippet-rings, Mirage tippet, and indicator sections to tight-line nymph. Stop by the store if you would like to learn how. Staley's Ice Off is worthwhile this week. You can purchase your 2018 "All Species" license and print it out on your printer or save the PDF to your phone.... Go to the Department of Natural Resources website to purchase your new license.

Cold temps make tight-line nymphing techniques sensible since stripping is not necessary. Fish remain slow to take, but guides continue to launch, float, and strip streamers on warmer days and catching some good fish. Tight-line nymph techniques are working with small nymphs if you can overcome the ice in the guides (Stanley's Ice Off). Water is extremely clear and fish are very spooky right now. Upper Manistee River Description

ENTIRE RIVER IS OPEN NOW UNTIL OCTOBER 1, 2018. "FLIES-ONLY" FROM M72 TO CCC BRIDGE.

The Upper Manistee is perhaps Michigan’s finest self-sustaining trout stream. More than 60 miles of wadeable water from its headwaters to the “flies-only” section downstream, make it truly Michigan’s most accessible fly angling water. The river is approximately thirty to sixty feet across in most stretches with ...

Techniques & Tips

It's time to start pulling streamers for large post spawn browns when temps are above freezing. However, freezing temps make stripping streamers tough with icy guides. Small nymphs using tight-line techniques will work in these conditions. Longer 9' 6" or 10' rods are better tight-line choices since keeping the line off the water is easier, Stop by the store is you would like to learn how to fish this tight technique. If stripping streamers is your ticket, 9 foot 6 weights are perfect for throwing streamers all day. Saltwater, full-wells grips, will open your grip and help minimize tension on your forearm from casting hundreds of casts each day streamer fishing.
