Originally from Maine, Jim Lepage has been with Orvis since 1990. Starting as a product developer, Jim brought with him an engineering background and experience as a metallurgical and chemical processing engineer. He had also worked as a commercial fly tier and a Maine guide for brook trout and landlocked salmon.

When he started at Orvis, Jim was one of two product developers responsible for rods, reels, flies, creels, and all other fly fishing gear. He spearheaded development on every rod series since the PM-10, including the new Helios and Superfine Trout Bum rods. Jim also had a hand in the Odyssey, Vortex, CFO disc, Battenkill disc, Battenkill Mid-Arbor and Battenkill Large Arbor reels. Since the beginning at Orvis, Jim has risen to Divisional Merchandise Manager of Outdoors (hunting and fishing), and Men’s, and is now vice-president of Orvis Rod & Tackle and the Men’s division. Jim has fished most of the best trout rivers and saltwater in North America and around the world, from Argentina to Austria. He is an expert fly fisherman And is a fountain of knowledge who is always willing to help teach and share his knowledge. The author of Fly Fishing for Stillwater Trout, and co-author of The Orvis Lodge Cookbook,he has been the Vermont representative for IGFA for the past six years and holds the world record for fly-caught bonito, which he landed in the waters off Martha’s Vineyard.

At the age of 15, Jim taught himself to fly fish on an inexpensive fly rod he’d saved for all summer. His curiosity about fly fishing arose when the lures he and his father would cast to rising trout and salmon on Rangeley and Mooselookmeguntic Lakes in Maine never produced strikes. From then on he spent many hours fly fishing. He learned about the sport and art only from what he read. When Jim was 24, his father took up fly fishing and they started spending time together on both still water and streams. Now, with Jim’s son Brian, a highly respected western trout fishing and big-game hunting guide, three generations of Lepages harass the trout populations of North America

Jim is a consummate outdoorsman. He is a relentless deer hunter who prefers highly remote woods for trophy bucks. He loves to hunt upland birds. He is a serious student of wildflowers and edible mushrooms. But besides fly fishing and his family, his greatest passion is hunting ducks with his two labs.
