The Orvis Commitment
As guided by our mission, our primary research focus is the ecology and management of fire-dependent ecosystems, and wildlife, including bobwhite quail, in the Southeastern Coastal Plain. Our conservation efforts are dedicated to helping protect the distinctive, rural landscape of South Georgia and North Florida and its traditional land uses. Through these programs, Tall Timbers transfers research and conservation information for resource management.
Providing information for effective resource management has been a longtime interest of The Orvis Company. To this end, Orvis has supported the work of Tall Timbers’ Game Bird Program by sponsoring a study to better understand how management affects bobwhite winter food use and foraging ecology.
The Wade Tract Preserve is a National Landmark
The Wade Tract Preserve is the first conservation easement donated to Tall Timbers. The Wade Tract is a 200-acre old-growth research plot managed by Tall Timbers near Thomasville, GA. The Wade Tract is one of only a very few old-growth stands that has continually been managed with fire; and also the only stand specifically dedicated for research purposes. The history of research conducted there, coupled with the extreme rarity of this old-growth forest type, make the Wade Tract one of the most important ecological research sites anywhere. Many trees on the tract are over 400-years old, and noted conservationist E.O. Wilson declared the site “…a national treasure…” in his letter to the National Park Service supporting the site’s designation as a national landmark.
Every 3-4 years, a census of the trees is conducted by Dr. William Platt, which he initiated when he was at Louisiana State University; this is the 35th anniversary of the census.
Tall Timbers Land Conservancy
The Tall Timbers Land Conservancy (TTLC) is one of the largest regional land trusts in the South. Through its efforts landowners have donated conservation easements of more than 114,000 acres of open space and natural areas that will be permanently protected.
TTLC was accredited by the Land Trust Accreditation Commission in February 2009 and has submitted its renewal application for 2014, for the next five years. The accreditation seal is awarded to land trusts which comply with the Land Trust Standards and Practices, the ethical and technical guidelines for the responsible operation of a land trust.
Tall Timbers and the Florida – Georgia Coalition
On August 9, 2013 Tall Timbers and Quail Forever (QF) held its first Quail Forever Chapter development meeting in Tampa, Florida to support the soon to be developed “Florida-Georgia Quail Coalition.” Over the next year, plans are to develop QF chapters to support on-going Coalition quail projects in both states!
The Coalition is a partnership between Tall Timbers, Quail Forever, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources – Wildlife Resources Division. Its mission is to enhance and promote quality northern bobwhite habitat on public lands in Florida and Georgia.
