The Story

If you've ever had the desire to raise a fine, handcrafted shotgun to your cheek and fire a perfect shot, look no further than the Classic Sandanona Wingshooting School, offered in either a one- or a two-day program. Situated in the scenic upstate New York town of Millbrook, Sandanona encompasses more than 400 acres of meticulously-manicured upland hunting grounds. Spend one or two full days shooting at the Sandanona Grounds, including, in the two-day school, an afternoon on the world-class sporting clays course accompanied by experienced Orvis shotgun shooting instructors. From first-timers to accomplished wingshooters, everyone is welcome at the Orvis Sandanona shotgun shooting school.

The Orvis Winghooting Schools were the first of their kind offered in the United States, and for over twenty-five years have offered shooters the finest wingshooting and hunting instruction available anywhere in the world.

Based on the English Churchill method, our instinctive approach to shotgunning offers both the novice and the seasoned veteran a complete shooting system that can be used for upland and waterfowl hunting and sporting clays. The fundamentals of the Orvis system include stance, footwork, gun handling, swing, visual concentration, proper gun mount, and correct fit of the gun stock.

The Orvis shooting instructors are consummate professionals who are beside you at every shot quietly analyzing and improving your style.

In addition to firing hundreds of rounds of ammunition, each student participates in classroom instruction on basic shotgun safety, shotshell selection, and shotgun patterning. Students are grouped together according to their level of skill and experience, and treated to a uniquely designed, fully automated instruction area that provides a full array of clay target angles.

The tuition includes comprehensive shooting instruction, all targets and ammunition, lunches each school day, and a copy of the Orvis Wingshooting Handbook. The use of an Orvis shotgun is available at no additional charge if desired. A complimentary gun fitting to establish and record individual stock dimensions is also available for students participating in the two-day school at this location.

Both 1 & 2 Day Schools offer small class sizes – a 4:1 student-to-instructor ratio.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Orvis Always Delivers I took the 2 day sporting clay course at Sandanona earlier in August with the expectation of picking up a new hobby for when fishing was slow. Little did I know that after the first day, I would be hooked and researching my first shotgun that evening. As usual, for an Orvis run facility, the staff and instructors were amazing and always professional. The grounds were immaculate, and I had a great time learning the proper way to shoot. An added bonus was meeting some great shooting partners in my class! Today, I went to pick up my new gun fresh from the factory and had a first time shooter in tow for a round of the clay course. The craftsmanship and quality of the gun is fantastic and I am extremely happy with my purchase through Sandanona. Our trapper, Kevin, was equally fantastic; he not only provided a friendly and fun atmosphere, but also took the time to make sure my colleague was comfortable with shooting and provided assistance and guidance until he too was blasting clays out of the sky. You really can't go wrong with a morning or afternoon cruising the grounds. While it may be a little pricey (think greens fees at a nice golf course), you get what you pay for and that is an experience at a top notch facility that will make you want to come back again and again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 2 Day Wingshooting School For some time now I wanted to take one of the Orvis Wingshooting Schools and I finally had the chance to do it. First of all is was definitely well worth the wait. As someone who also teaches people in manual skills I was very impressed in both their skill and patience. I have never met two better instructors than Jack & Joe. I came away from this school with a far greater understanding of Wingshooting and look forward taking what they have taught me and improving on my skills in the future.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome experience Shooting trap for over 20 years and finally decided to enroll in a program where I could 'learn' in a professional and supportive setting. This was a straight up fantastic program, The instruction and setting was everything I expected. A must for someone who is interested in fine tuning their skills and enjoying a great day.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from And also.... Just an addendum to my last post. I made an error and misspelled one the instructor's names. It Joe Waasi, not Joe Stassi. Sorry bout that. Yesterday, my brother and I came back yesterday to shoot 100+ rounds each and I learned 2 things. You need to practice, practice and practice your proper shooting form, if you want to have any hope of getting good at this sport and this is a classy place to do just that. Also, I can see why the 2 day school - if you can go for the extra $$ and have the time, is so preferable to the 1 day class; it simply and immediately reinforces what you've learned on the first day. But either class will be a most pleasant, memorable and enjoyable experience.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful experience I attended the 1 day class at the Sandanona school yesterday with my brother and will echo what others have said. Our instructors - Joe Staasi and Andy McDermott, couldn't have been more helpful and the wealth of knowledge they imparted is amazing. Rank beginners to experienced shooters can benefit from this program or with enough time allowed, the 2 day course. Too many accolades to mention, simply put, if you are on the fence about attending, just do it. A memorable experience.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great day Just completed the 1 day course. An truely outstanding day. Beautiful shooting grounds. Great instructors. The day was packed with useful information and a great deal of one on one instruction. I know that my shooting skills have been be greatly enhanced through this class. Very worthwhile to any field hunter or sporting clay enthusiast who wants to increase their success in and their enjoyment of the sport.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from a bang-up weekend My daughter and I walked around Gamefair for a day this past September (highly recommended); she had a chance to shoot clays under the watchful eye of Jack Neubauer. Returned the next weekend for two days of instruction with Jack and Joe. The birds back home evidently never received the news, and the first two to flush, when I returned to my home fields, went into my bag as a "double." Never was there so sweet a compliment as when Jack said "Nice shootin'" on my having run a stand. Thanks, fellers.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Rifle shooter converted! All Marines are maybe this one is a wingshooter. This was a superb course of instruction. I was looking for a shooting sport that I could get my wife and family into. Outside the military, I have never been to a more professionally run course. The instructors are not only excellent instructors who clearly know wingshooting, they are interesting people as well from varied backgrounds. You will shoot quite a bit. I was in rotation with my wife and son and I easily had well over 100 shots. No politics...just shooting. By the end of the day, I was making shots I had never even imagined making before. Most importantly to me, my wife and son (who hit many more targets than me, who knew?) had a great time and looking forward to shooting again. I highly recommend.
