The Story

The Orvis South Carolina Fly-Fishing School is held at Oldfield's Arrowhead Pavilion in Okatie in the heart of the Lowcountry. Nestled on the banks of the Okatie River, Oldfield Club is a private club community that features Lowcountry living at its best. Located halfway between Charleston, SC and Savannah, GA, convenient to I-95 and the Hilton Head/Savannah International Airport, and just 20 minutes from Historic Beaufort, Oldfield Club is surrounded by miles of salt and brackish marsh, salt flats, and oyster flats, and is home to some of the Lowcountry's finest fly fishing. Numerous stocked ponds in Oldfield provide fantastic fishing for bass and panfish and kayaks are available to paddle alongside dolphins in the soothing waters of the Okatie. Other activities include 5 miles of nature and walking trails, a Greg Norman-designed 18-hole golf course, golf clubhouse with full bar and dining, equestrian facilities, a sports center with a full workout facility, sauna, steam, and aerobic facilities, and waterfront dining at the scenic River House. The school covers everything from fly casting, choosing the right tackle, leaders and knots, to fly selection and how to safely release fish. Choose our one-day or two-day school.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Great Experience I am a novice at fly fishing. Dave Murray was an excellent and patient instructor and Tony from Bay Street Outfitters a gracious host--learned a lot in two days while enjoying a beautiful outdoor setting. If you want to learn the basics of fly fishing you really couldn't do any better than this experience, Thank you Dave and Tony!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Casting Improvement I was extremely happy with the professional instruction for saltwater fly casting at the Okatie, SC school. The instructor was patient and extremely knowledgeable. He identified several small bad habits that impeded my ability to improve beyond "adequate". I now have confidence that I have the right technique to continue to improve if I put in the practice time. I recommend investing money on this first, before any major investment in better equipment or your dream fly fishing adventure. Money well spent.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very knowledgeable and patient instructor I am a total novice to fly fishing. I have been a spin fisherman all my 70 years. Our Instructor has a wealth of experience and a great ability to communicate the hows and a few tricks along the way. It actually was a very enjoyable and informative 2 day school. Well worth your time and money.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful Instructor, Great Location Took the 2 Day school with Dave Murray and it was terrrific !! The Oldfield Club is very friendly and its a lovely setting. But, Dave, is a reason to take the school, he is a great instructor- he is patient, interested in what you want to learn and tailors class to you. I learned so much ( to say I am a beginner understates it) can't wait to practice what he showed me and get on the water. B Nelson/Chicago

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great school Was very pleased with this school. Had some experience and was worried it would be too basis, but was able to progress at my pace. Improved casting substantially and finally got comfortable with the double haul. Great instructor with lots of experience. Vey good teacher.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exceeded Expectations Great 2-day class conducted by Capt. Dave Murray with assistant Andrew Lacks. Small class with lots of individual attention; enjoyable fast paced; and even the lunches were fun with Dave and Andrew sharing fishing experiences. I was challenged the first day, but it all started coming together for me on the second day. I recommend before the class read up on basics of tackle, gear, lines, and leaders. But do not try to learn casting without going to this school first, and that way you won't have to erase bad habits. After trying to master what I learned, I look forward to getting some personal follow-up instruction from Dave.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Teaching Old dogs New Tricks Captain Dave is one heck of an instructor! I recently completed his 2 day class. He is highly skilled and patient as he tried to break me of my old bait casting habits. His class combines classroom knowledge and field application. If you are just getting in to fly fishing, this class will be extremely helpful. If you already have some basic skills, you will certainly improve with his coaching. The class is worth every penny and you'll get to spend 2 days with one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Class Just finished the 2-day class with Captain Dave Murray. It was a small class, so the one-on-one guidance was incredibly helpful in honing casting technique, answering questions and presenting relevant information. Captain Dave is a world class instructor, and one of the nicest people you'll ever meet. He's truly passionate about what he does. Definitely worth every penny.
