Hilary Hutcheson

Orvis Fly-Fishing Ambassador

Hilary started her fly-fishing career as a teenage guide in West Glacier, Montana. She guided through college, then took her journalism degree to Portland, Oregon, where she worked as a television news anchor and reporter. She eventually returned to Montana to co-own and operate Outside Media and Trout TV for a decade.

Today, Hilary guides on the Flathead River system and the Middle Fork of the Salmon River and owns and runs Lary's Fly & Supply in her hometown.

In addition to writing for outdoor publications, Hilary is also a committed volunteer and advocate. She volunteers as a fly-fishing instructor for Casting for Recovery, serves as a national board member of Backcountry Hunters and Anglers, and is a climate activist with Protect Our Winters.

Hilary loves spending time with her two teenage daughters, especially volunteering together on the oars.

”Whether it's with loved ones or strangers, I love a big adventure with others. I love when a day on the water with friends and family is filled with stoke and energy. It's not that I dislike fishing alone, I just prefer community over solitude on the water.”
