The Story

If you want to understand the essence of fly fishing and feel like you have your own English chalk stream, you need to journey to the storied waters of England at least once in your lifetime. Here, amidst the green, rural countryside and the quaint villages flow the rivers where fly fishing was born. To cast a fly on the Test, the Itchen, and the Nadder, or other kindred waters, is to step far back in angling history to where the sport was born. We pride ourselves in sharing these Hallowed waters with you, and we look forward to educating each guest on the ecology, biology, and conditions that make English chalk streams so unique. Moreover, we will also share the etiquette of fishing these historic beats. This trip will be based out of the quaint town of Stockbridge where our river beats will only be a short drive away each day. Also nearby are many cultural experiences for the angler and non-angler alike. These experiences can be tailored to the guest’s desires.

  • FISH THE LEGENDARY WATERS Itchen, Test and Nadder beats with a small group of anglers
  • LEARN FISHING TIPS and techniques from the local guides and chalk stream experts
  • EASY ACCESS through London Heathrow
  • 6 NIGHT PACKAGE includes 5 days of guided fishing, accommodations, and all meals
  • ORVIS UK HOST to help ensure the best experience

Day 1: Arrival in Stockbridge
Check-in is sometime after 2pm for those traveling on their own. Guests arrive at Andover Railway station at 3pm where you will meet for a ground transfer to the Grosvenor. The drive from Andover to Stockbridge is a beautiful, 20-minute ride through the English countryside, just enough to get an early taste of your surroundings for the next few days. When you get to the lodge you will have the opportunity have a cocktail or snack in the pub before heading to your room to unpack and settle in. There will be an opening cocktail reception at 6pm and dinner will start at 7:30 in the main dining room. This schedule will give everyone time to unwind after their travels and relax while getting to know the rest of the group.

Fishing Days
Breakfast service begins at 8am. Breakfasts are included in your package and served in the main dining room. After breakfast, anglers will be paired up by the beat or waters they will be fishing that day with their guide and will depart for a full day of fly fishing. Non-anglers are free to explore the area on their own, relax around the hotel, or participate in activities arranged with the assistance of the group leader. All guests have the option of taking lunch in the field or returning to the hotel for lunch. Around 5:30pm, all anglers will return to the lodge and have time to shower and join us for Happy Hour in the downstairs pub. Around 8pm, dinner is served in the main dining room.

Departure Day from Stockbridge
Breakfast service begins at 7:15am in the main dining room. After breakfast, the driver will return you to Andover Station by 9:30am for those looking for an earlier start. For those looking to stay in Stockbridge a little longer, you can check out and depart at your leisure (transportation on own).

Chalk streams have the unique quality of rarely flooding or drying out. During heavy rains or sudden thaws, the water is absorbed by the valley into the underlying chalk, and later distributed through springs to the stream. This means the native brown trout's habitat is rarely disturbed and scouring floods do not deplete his food. This freedom from flooding is also very important to the fisherman, as chalk streams are almost always fishable regardless of weather conditions.

The 'Ginger Beer' beat is our flagship piece of the River Test. It has a long history that dates back to the Doomsday book. This productive beat is a third of a mile in length with a medium flow rate, interesting shallows, and a bubbling top pool. The beat can be booked exclusively for the day with a guide for up to 5 rods but can accommodate up to 10 for a corporate fun-day on the river. Our thatched fishing lodge and easy access make it ideal for entertaining.

The Timsbury 5 beat is a mid to lower stretch of the main River Test with an idyllic chalk stream carrier. There is just under half a mile of main river fishing and 370 yards of carrier, which is catch and release. The main river has a moderate flow rate with shallows and deep runs. It has good aquatic fly with a good mayfly and prolific sedge hatches later in the summer.

Our Abbots Worthy beat on the River Itchen is about a third of a mile with single and double-bank fishing. It is the most challenging of our pieces of water for casting and stalking, as it is clear year-round, with good aquatic fly life providing plenty of hatches, including Iron Blue and Large Dark Olive in good numbers and even the rare Turkey Brown. Most of the River Itchen is a conservation area under SSSI management; we are promoting catch and release on this stretch to preserve its native brown trout. This beat is also home to some superb grayling with fish to over 3 lbs. caught each season.

If sight fishing over bright gravel beds, picking out trout with a dry fly or sight fishing with a traditional nymph pattern between the waving tails of ranunculus is your chalkstream dream then this is the place to head for. You will rarely find a more beautiful spot than these beats on the Upper Test, where the 2 ½ miles of un-spoiled chalkstream fishing is always crystal clear. Immaculately maintained, with three picturesque fishing huts, Bullington Manor is excellent for the seasonal hatches we hanker after, where the chalkstream year may be measured by the flies you pluck from your box.

Generally regarded as the finest stretch of the Nadder the beats – seven in all – are part of the Compton Chamberlayne Estate, which winds through lovely, sheep-grazed water meadows. Each beat is for one or two rods, and is well stocked with brown trout reared on the Estate and rotating daily to offer plenty of variety.

There are non-guided opportunities within the area and include the magnificent gardens of Hilliers Arboretum, Stourhead Gardens, and many others. Other activities include the cultural attractions of Winchester Cathedral and City, Stockbridge, and Salisbury Cathedral and City. As if that isn’t enough, Stonehenge and the lesser known but equally fascinating Avebury Ring is just a short drive! Lastly, a visit to High Clear Castle, where Downton Abbey was filmed. All these local attractions can be coupled with impromptu stops at local pubs and museums to add on the local flavor.

Nestled in the idyllic Test Valley, at the very heart of Stockbridge’s High Street, is The Grosvenor. An imposing Georgian listed building, The Grosvenor originally incorporated the town’s Market Hall. It was named after Lord Grosvenor when built in the early 19th century. Easily identified by its iconic 'porte-cochère' or ‘coach gate’, The Grosvenor and its distinctive porch once provided arriving and departing carriage-occupants protection from the elements, whilst luggage and travelers on top could enter the building by what was then the high-level door. Continuing inside, you will find The Danebury Room, named by Tom Cannon (jockey-turned-trainer and former owner of The Grosvenor) after the horse races that were held on the neighboring Danebury Downs. As the building was gently restored to its ultimate glory, The Danebury Room was one of the first to receive treatment and following weeks of work by a dedicated team of decorators and French polishers, the once-dull oak panels depicting etchings of Cannon’s winning horses now lustre in all their glory.

Sympathetic restoration continued throughout the ground floor from the large, welcoming reception area through the bar and onwards, breathing new life into the expanse of original parquet floors throughout. This is just a taste of what you will find inside this iconic Hampshire building.
