The Story

Come travel with us to Alaska for a week of exceptional fly fishing, and enjoy cozy accommodations at Boardwalk Lodge on Prince of Wales Island. For decades, guests and adventure seekers alike have recognized the Lodge for its five-star Alaska adventure. It has participated in the elite Orvis-Endorsed Fly-Fishing Program for over 20 years, and was nominated by Orvis for their coveted 2021 Lodge of the Year award. The oceanfront resort features world-class saltwater fishing, freshwater fishing, and spectacular Southeast Alaska eco tours. The fishing variety alone —including 5 species of Pacific salmon, Alaska halibut, coastal steelhead, and much more—is enough to entice the most discriminating anglers from across the globe. The Lodge is located on Prince of Wales Island in Southeast Alaska, just a short 30-minute floatplane ride west from Ketchikan. Here, you’ll enjoy the solitude of fishing wild Alaska, with first-class fishing guides, gourmet food, and comfortable accommodations. For those who want to experience more of Southeast Alaska, the lodge guides are always eager to share the island’s beauty and mystery, including native artifacts and culture, scenic trails, beaches, and Alaska’s longest cave system. There are over 2,500 square miles to explore, where gray wolves, black bears, and Sitka black-tailed deer far outnumber people. Besides fishing, many guests also enjoy watching whales and other marine life among Alaska’s famed “Inside Passage.” Join us for an all-inclusive, heart-pounding, rod-bending adventure!

The Boardwalk Lodge is privately owned and is known as an adventure travel destination for corporate retreats, sportsman’s groups, and families. Its style is often described as "rustic elegance." The lodge is made up of two guest lodges that sit on 26 acres of oceanfront property overlooking a solitary tidal inlet of Thorne Bay, Alaska. The property accommodates up to 19 guests in an intimate wilderness setting. Each room or suite is tastefully furnished with its own private bath. The lodge maintains rooms and transportation that are wheelchair accessible and is happy to accommodate special needs. Provided on site is free Wi-Fi access, laundry service and a gift shop. The friendly atmosphere and common areas such as the meeting room, fire pit, and Jacuzzi create great spaces to connect with fellow anglers and non-anglers alike to regale in the day’s activities.

Boardwalk’s culinary staff pride themselves on their tastebud-tantalizing creations. The culinary staff is carefully chosen, so that individuals can receive exceptional and personalized service. They’re delighted to accommodate special occasions or personal dietary requirements. Each day, breakfast starts off with a hearty made-to-order breakfast. Choose from among sweet, savory, and healthy options, including pancakes and fresh breads or muffins. High-protein selections might include omelets, eggs to order, and a wide selection of breakfast meats and sausages. Gourmet coffees, teas, hot chocolate, and juices are available to satisfy your thirst. Daily lunch buffets provide guests a variety of nutritious and tasty options to fuel a day on the water. Sandwich items, drinks, fruit, and freshly baked homemade goods allow guests to create a lunch that can be enjoyed streamside. House wine and beer are available free of charge, while you enjoy a delicious assortment of appetizers and hors d’oeuvres. The lodge carries an assortment of other alcoholic beverages for purchase. Premium wines by the glass and mixed drinks are available for a nominal fee. For dinner, meals begin with an elegant salad course or delicious soup du jour, incorporating the freshest ingredients. Nightly entrees include meat, fish, or poultry, expertly crafted with southeast Alaskan flair and accompanied by pasta, rice, and summer vegetables. Finishers like homemade ice cream, cheesecake, creme brulee, and molten chocolate creations cap off the evening.

Rise early for a full day of fishing. Breakfast is made to order starting at 5:45am. Enjoy a gourmet beverage on deck, as you eat breakfast and watch the sun rise. Around 7am meet with your guide who will plan the day with you. With your guide you will come up with a general plan of attack for targeted species and specific waterways. Staff will ready your gear and grab some liquid refreshments as you pack some provisions and goodies from the hearty lunch buffet. Lunch will be served on the water. Depending on your desired fishing plan, fishing will average no more than nine hours each day, concluding at 4pm. Additional fishing may be arranged with the lodge manager at his discretion for a moderate per-hour cost. After an adventurous day, guests usually take the opportunity to freshen up, grab their drink of choice and relax. There will be a hors d'oeuvres reception before dinner. Dinner will consist of a 3-course meal which will also include select house wine and beer free of charge. After dinner, guests can be found lounging in the Jacuzzi, watching an evening fire, or stargazing at the Alaskan night sky.

Alaska’s famous Salmon run provides a target-rich environment—with three primary species active in-season —which often provide hours of non-stop action. Alaskan coho salmon are a primary target this time of year. These coho, or silver salmon, average in the 12- to 15-pound range, with trophy-class fish topping out around 18 pounds. They’re tackle-busters and full of energy and their acrobatic fights are a heck of a lot of fun. Pound-for-pound, these fish are among the hardest-fighting salmon. Yearly Pacific salmon, including coho, pink, sockeye and chum Salmon, have never seen an artificial fly. These salmon species storm our waterways from late July through September. Resident and sea-run cutthroat trout and Dolly Varden char often provide sustained, non-stop excitement year-round. Freshwater fishing trips to 23 local waterways are easily accessed on the island with a fleet of Suburbans, making fly-out trips optional but unnecessary. Many of these neighboring waters are only fished when Boardwalk Lodge guests venture out, allowing guests to cast and catch in solitude. Most fishing is walk-and-wade access, catered to expert and novice anglers alike. Adjacent to the freshwater fishing program is a saltwater program. This is ideal for guests wanting to take home several pounds of fresh frozen fillets, give their casting arm a rest or desire some additional variety. This program features US Coast Guard licensed captains who operate a fleet of 28-foot ocean cruisers in search of salmon, halibut, rockfish, and other aquatic life. Boardwalk’s saltwater fishing boats are 28-foot V-Hull Cuddy style boats that include heated cabins and sanitary facilities. Also onboard are GPS navigation, fish finders, and radio communication equipment. Just 4 guests to a vessel. These boats are particularly well-suited for Alaska fishing, water, and weather conditions.
