Baffin Bay Rod and Gun, TX

Orvis-Endorsed Fly-Fishing Lodge in Riviera, Texas

Baffin Bay Rod and Gun, TX

One of the most unique and remote place on the Texas Coast is Baffin Bay and it provides fishermen with a resource that is virtually untouched by humanity. Bordered by the King and Kenedy Ranches, the bay's shorelines remain the way they were hundreds of years ago, without multiple boat ramps, condos, powerlines or water towers. Baffin Bay is considered the Mecca of Trophy Trout fishing in Texas.

The eight guides at Baffin Bay Rod and Gun are all hand-picked for their boating knowledge, safety awareness and unmatched customer service. Understanding all of the unique factors on the bay system, our guides study the seasonal patterns of the fish and are well qualified to avoid the navigational hazards in the bay, like the infamous Baffin "rocks". These rocks are an ancient formation created by tiny serpulid worms over a period of hundreds of years. They resemble coral formations and are prevalent throughout the bay.

Together, we have developed a certain style of business that reflects our attitudes towards fishing. Being able to spend as much time outdoors as we do is a privilege, and we make sure that we leave nothing but footprints anywhere we go.

Capt. Sally and Capt. Black got married in 2010, while working together but separately for a couple of years on two bay systems, Capt. Black's Outdoor Adventures and Capt. Sally's Reel Fun Charters planned a merger in 2012 with a unique union of their two separate businesses. Capt. Sally moved her fly fishing guide business to Baffin Bay from Rockport and joined forces with Capt. Black to create their new company, Baffin Bay Rod and Gun.

Then, in April of 2014, their lodge and home were completely destroyed by a fire. It took two years to reopen and the NEW Baffin Bay Rod and Gun grew from those ashes into one of the Texas Coast's premier wingshooting lodges. The new lodge, which opened in 2016, accommodates 20 hunters with a staff of eight guides and six people who know the meaning of customer service.

This customer service attitude extends to the entire atmosphere of our lodge. We take South Texas hospitality a step farther and make our clients feel at home. Our guides and staff are very accessible and helpful. You are not just a number or a guest when you walk through our doors. Once you have been here, you will most assuredly want to return. Then, you are practically considered family.

BBR&G is located on the very back of the bay, where there is a small town of 750 people, surrounding the boat ramp and County Park. Private jets and planes can land at the King Ranch/Kleberg County airport, which is well-appointed and within a 30 minute drive from the lodge which is also conveniently near the Corpus Christi International Airport, which is less than an hour's drive away.

Fly fishing at Baffin Bay Rod and Gun starts at $550 per person, per day, and includes lodging, meals, fishing and tax.

During late spring thru Fall, you can expect to find redfish and black drum either in small schools or larger feeding individuals. During this same time frame, big spotted seatrout are also up shallow and if you are paying close attention to thee elusive ambush feeders, you may get a shot at a true trophy. Flounder are plentiful especially in the early spring and can provide plenty of excitement as they tend to group up in sandy potholes along the edges of flats.

Fly fishing is enjoyed all year-round at Baffin Bay Rod and Gun, however, it can be weather dependent, especially in the winter months. Even then, hard-core fly enthusiasts can blind cast for the huge trophy speckled trout Baffin Bay is known for, in relatively shallow water, during those winter month. Also, winter warm-ups bring big fish up shallow to feed. Late Spring, Summer and Fall offer more stable, warm conditions which bring all predator species up shallow.

South Texas is known for it's brush country with low cover, cactus and other native bushes and shrubs. Mesquite trees and palms populate the terrain as well. Baffin Bay is very remote and chances are you will not see another boat during your trip. The King Ranch and the Kenedy Ranch cover most of the shorelines on Baffin Bay, so, it is wild and untouched, much like it was hundreds of years ago. There are unique structures in Baffin Bay created by tiny serpulid worms. These ancient formations attract baitfish and predators such as spotted seatrout, redfish and black drum. Shallow, clear grass flats and sand flats are plentiful and give sightcasters many great opportunities to cast to feeding redfish, drum and an occasional trout.

Typical Weather:

Prime time for sight casting with the fly is when the weather is warm, most specifically late Spring through early Fall. It can be windy, but it is usually sunny. Temperatures can range from 65 degrees through 90 degrees, depending on the month. Winter temperatures can range from 40 degrees to 80 degrees.

What is Provided:

Lunches, soda and water are provided on the boats with all trips. With advance notice, any special dietary or drink requirements can be filled. We have Orvis fly rods as well as wading gear to rent.

What to Bring:

During the winter, while rare, it can get quite cold in South Texas. Layering with good technical gear underneath good quality waders is a must. A good technical wading jacket and gloves are also very important to making sure you are comfortable whatever Mother Nature throws your way. We say, stay dry, stay warm. On sunny days, a good pair of polarized sunglasses in brown or amber can be your most important tool as it is hard to sight cast to shallow fish without them. A comfortable cap or hat with a dark under brim will help you to spot the fish as well as it will help cut the glare of the summer time sun in South Texas. Sunscreen is a must as the summer sun in South Texas can be intense. Apply liberally and often. Lip balm and anything special that you can't live without. There's a lot of room on the boats at Baffin Bay Rod and Gun.
