Hosted by The Saltwater Edge in Middletown, Rhode Island the Orvis Saltwater Fly Fishing School will make the most of its location on Aquidneck Island. The island offers almost as many places to cast a fly as to find a terrific meal. With Newport, Rhode Island "America's First Resort" minutes from the shop there plenty to do at night or for your spouse during the day or reason to extend your stay. Little Rhody played an important role in the development of saltwater fly fishing in part due to the variety of species available depending on the season. Striped bass and bluefish get top billing as season-long visitors, and bonito and false albacore bring their excitement to these shores most every fall. You will learn saltwater specific tactics and techniques to prepare you for a day on the water. Fly casting, tackle and fly selection, rigging, fish fighting as well as proper release techniques will be emphasized.

  • 60-90 days prior to trip - 50% of trip cost

9:00 Students register at Saltwater edge store in Middle town RI
9:30 Classroom presentation on tackle and flies.
10:45 The Orvis Progressive Method to Teaching Fly Casting part one and two: Video on the basic casting stroke, shooting line, false casting, false casting and shooting line, and roll casting with a focus on Saltwater fishing scenarios. 
11:00 Group reports to the casting area
Noon Lunch
1:00 The Orvis Progressive Method to Teaching Fly Casting part three: Video on the double haul.
1:15 Report to casting area for demonstration on the double haul. Students casting.
2:15 Knot tying seminar
3:00 Casting in windy conditions, Hook setting and fish fighting, tips on fishing with guides students casting
4:00 Return to schoolroom for closing statements.
4:30 End of school

Day One

10:45 Report to casting area for demonstration on the basic casting stroke; students casting.

1:00 Classroom presentation on leaders, and hands-on knot tying.
2:15 The Orvis Progressive Method to Fly Casting part two; video on shooting line, false casting, and roll casting.
2:30 Report to casting area for demonstration on shooting line, false casting, and roll casting; students casting. Video tape students casting.
4:00 Classroom presentation on fly fishing equipment and accessories.
4:30 End of first day.

Day Two

9:00 Classroom presentation – Entomology and fly selection. Tips on how to handle, photograph and release fish. Demonstration on hook-setting and fish fighting techniques.
10:00 Video analysis.
10:30 The Orvis Progressive Method to Fly Casting part three; video on the double haul.
10:45 Report to casting area for demonstration on double hauling, and casting techniques for windy conditions; students casting.
Noon Lunch (catered to school.)
1:00 Orvis-Endorsed fishing trips, and tips on fishing with guides.
1:15 Caravan to Sachuest Point for Reading water discussion and fishing
3:45 Return to classroom for closing statements and graduation certificates.
4:00 End of school.

Question: When is the best time to go?
Answer - There is no “best time” per se. The school season is during the nicest part of the year weather-wise. Chances for warm weather increase as the season goes on.

Question: When does the school start and end? What will we be doing during the day? How long will we be fishing?
Answer - Refer to the school itinerary for the schedule.

Question: What is included in the price of the school?
Answer - Use of Orvis fly rods/reels, leaders, flies, and where necessary waders, vests, and fishing licenses.

Question: Is lodging included?
Answer - No. Lodging arrangements are made separately by the students.

Question: Are meals included?
Answer - Lunch is the only meal included in the school tuition price.

Question: Where can I stay?
Answer - At the hosts’ lodging, or nearby lodging of your choice.

Question: How many people will be in the class?
Answer - That depends on the school. The maximum number of students is eight, always with a ratio of one instructor for every four students.

Question: Do we stop the school because of weather?
Answer - No.

Question: How much time is spent in the classroom vs. casting and fishing?
Answer - See school itinerary.

Question: Can you bring your own equipment?
Answer - Yes.

Question: Is this class for intermediate anglers?
Answer - Yes. In casting, we adjust our instruction to the individual student’s level.

Question: How old do my children have to be to join me in this fishing school?
Answer - At the Middletown Rhode Island School, youngsters should be at least 14 years old (because of the heavier tackle used). All other schools we recommend 12 years of age.

Question: What is the cancellation policy?
Answer - Should you need to cancel the school within 30 days prior to the starting date, we will issue a gift certificate in the amount of the cancelled school. That gift certificate may be used toward another school date of your choice.

Question: What other recreation is available near the school?

Question: Will I be able to attend the same class as my son/wife/etc, even though I am an intermediate and they are a beginner?
Answer - Yes. In casting, we adjust our instruction to the individual student’s level.
