What skill levels does the school cater to?

How many students are in this school?

The school accommodates a maximum of 16 students. We group four students per instructor, according to the respective skill levels. Ratio is skill-dependent. We handle beginners to experts.

Can children join this school?

12 years or older.

What should I bring?

We always recommend that you dress in layers appropriate for the season. Cotton, although a comfortable fabric, is not a good choice for outdoor activities, especially in the summer. It can rain anytime of the year, so please remember to bring a waterproof jacket and pants. Hats, sunglasses, and sunblock are also recommended.

The Pheasant Bonanza Uplander School puts students in actual hunting situations where the appropriate gear is essential. Sturdy, comfortable, waterproof boots, briar pants and shirt, along with a field jacket are required.

Students may bring their own shotguns if they wish, but we have plenty of shotguns available for students to use ($30 per day rental fee) Ammunition will be available for purchase in our pro shop.

Are there specific gear recommendations?

Q. What is the largest shot size we can use?
A. 7 1/2 shot or smaller for the Ultimate Hunts and Sporting Clays. Six-shot or smaller for Field Hunts. Two-BB shot or smaller for Waterfowl Hunts. Ammunition is available in our ProShop.

Q. Cans we bring our own dogs?
A. You are more than welcome to use your own dogs, at your own risk.

Do I need to purchase a license?

Students attending the Uplander School will be provided a hunting license at time of registration.

What is the typical weather?

April: Daily high temperatures average 61°, daily low temperatures average 37°. Average rainfall for the month of April is 3 inches.

What lodging is available or in the area?

Overlooking the southern exposure of the Loess Hills, the Orvis-endorsed Ben Schoonover Lodge features three stories with 15 rooms: 12 rooms featuring two queen beds, and three rooms featuring one king bed. Rooms measure 400 sq. ft. and have full private baths. Each floor of the lodge has a lounge area, providing hunting groups with privacy. A freestanding fireplace extends through all three floors. We are excited to have a full commercial kitchen, bar, dining room, pool tables, conference rooms, balconies, and outdoor seating.

What about meals and dining?

All food and beverages are included in your school package.

Are there additional activities?

We have two nearby golf courses, a winery within five miles, and a great town to explore.

What happens when there is bad weather?

We shoot rain or shine. We only stop when there's lightning.
