A Florida fly-fishing school held at the famous Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo, the Orvis Flats Fishing Primer is a three-hour clinic geared for intermediate to advanced fly fishers who are going on their first flats trip or would like a refresher on sight-casting techniques. Taught by Orvis Head Fly-Fishing Instructor and Florida native, Truel Myers, the Orvis Flats Primer will get you ready for the challenging and exciting world of fly fishing saltwater flats.

Cancellation Policy

If the reservation is cancelled 60+ days from your school date, Orvis will offer a full refund back the original method of payment, or the reservation can be transferred to another available school. If the reservation is cancelled 30-60 days from the date of the school, the customer will have a choice between a refund of 50% or transferring the reservation to another available school. On cancellations 29 days or less there is no refund and no transfer. There will be no refund extended to students who do not attend their scheduled school and do not notify the school within the timeframes listed in this policy. Any reservation that has been transferred to a different date cannot be later cancelled without 100% payment penalty.

Itinerary

9:00 AM: Student registration at the Orvis Store at the Ocean Reef Club.

9:15 AM: Caravan to the Ocean Reef Casting Grounds.

  • Fly casting session.
  • Fly selection presentation.
  • Hook-setting and fish fighting demonstration.
  • How to work with your guide.
  • How to present flies in sight-casting situations.

12:00 Noon: End of clinic. Return to Ocean Reef Club.

Where is the school located?

The school is located at the world-famous Ocean Reef Club at the northern-most end of Key Largo. The club encompasses nearly 4,000 lush tropical acres on the edge of the Atlantic coastline famous for great fishing and diving. The Ocean Reef Club is approximately 1 hour south of Miami International Airport, 1½ hours from the Fort Lauderdale Airport and 130 miles north of Key West.

What skill levels does the school cater to?

Intermediate to advanced fly fishers taking their first flats trip, or anglers who would like a refresher course on flats fishing.

The clinic can accommodate four students.

Can children join this school?

We recommend children be at least 12 years old.

What should I bring?

Polarized sunglasses, cap/hat, sunscreen, and raingear.

Are there specific gear recommendations?

Yes. We recommend 8 to 12 weight rods.

No

What is the typical weather?

January/February: High temperatures in the 70s, lows in the 60s.
March/April: High temperatures in the mid 80s, lows in the 70s.

What lodging is available or in the area?

Most students stay on-site at the Ocean Reef Club while attending this school. Orvis students are offered “Member” rates on accommodations at Ocean Reef Club. When making reservations students should mention “Orvis Fly Fishing School” to receive the special rate. Reservation should be made between 8 AM-5 PM EST Monday-Sunday (877) 734-8439.
