Go fly fishing in Alaska and join us for Orvis Week at Intricate Bay Lodge. This is the ultimate Alaskan experience: six nights' lodging and six days' guided fly-out fishing. Every day we'll fly to a new location to fish waterways that can only be accessed by plane. Needless to say, the views, the fishing, and the memories will be unforgettable. You'll arrive at Iliamna airport early Saturday evening, and you'll be met by an Intricate Bay staff member. We'll load your gear into our van and take a short drive to our seaplanes. After the planes are loaded, we'll skim across the lake and climb into the magnificent Alaskan air for our short flight to Intricate Bay Lodge (IBL). If you've never flown in a seaplane, this will be as exciting and memorable as any other moment of your stay with us. When we pull up to the dock at IBL, you'll be met by our amazing guides. We'll drop your gear in your rooms and acquaint you with some of our very basic rulesdon't feed the bears. Your first evening will be spent relaxing and getting to know your guides as well as our other guests. You'll enjoy dinner, a few drinks, and lots of laughs while taking in some of the most beautiful views anywhere in the world.
Every morning starts with breakfast at 7:00 am. You're in a boat or plane by 8:00 am and off to your first location. Lunch will be served around 12:00 pm on the water. And you'll return to the lodge around 5:30 pm for happy hour. Dinner starts at 7:00 pm. The rest of the night is yours to enjoy drinks, the hot tub, watch the amazing sunsets and tell the best fish stories of your entire life. Friday is the last day of your experience. We'll fish through mid-day and then fly back to Iliamna Friday afternoon for your return flights back to Anchorage. Although this will be the end of your stay at IBL, by no means is this goodbye. Intricate Bay Lodge stays with you forever.

Intricate Bay Lodge was entirely rebuilt in 2015. The new facility has been constructed with no expense spared. This operation caters to only ten guests at a time and prides itself on providing an intimate, personal, and quality experience in the heart of Alaska’s Bristol Bay region. With fantastic fisheries nearby such as the Copper and Gibraltor, along with fly outs to all the favorites like Moraine, American, Talarik, and others, you can expect to fill your stay with fantastic fishing while enjoying the luxury of new accommodations at a lodge you can nearly call your own. The facility itself sits on the shores of Lake Iliamna. With fantastic views of the lake from the stunning deck, which includes a wood-burning hot tub, you will quickly see why owner/operator Brain Harry has so much passion for sharing his place with others.
September is probably the best month in all of Alaska to go after trophy trout. While the weather can be constantly changing, this is when the largest numbers of big lake rainbows come into area rivers. The fish know this is their last chance to pack on weight for the long winter ahead. The rainbows are still extremely aggressive toward salmon eggs and will chase a flesh fly with reckless abandon. In fact, they are willing to gorge themselves on just about anything you pass in front of them.
Accommodations and meals at the lodge, round-trip transportation between Iliamna (ILI) and the lodge, guiding, fly outs (weather permitting and dependent on your package), tackle and flies.
Airfare to/from Iliamna, fishing license (available online please purchase prior to arrival), alcohol (can be purchased at the lodge or pre-arranged and purchased prior to arrival), staff and guide gratuities (industry standard is 15% of package price), bed tax $10.00 per person per night.
All skill levels are welcome.
Moderate. Float and light hiking while wade fishing.
Children 16 and older that are eager to fish are welcome.
Intricate Bay Lodge owner/operator Brian Harry set out to rebuild the lodge in 2015. Sparing no expense and with a great sense of providing guests with the most comfortable and accommodating lodge in the region, the new Intricate Bay Lodge opened in the summer of 2014. The lodge includes five double-occupancy rooms with private baths along with a vaulted ceiling common area where guests can warm themselves around the stone fireplace while sharing stories of the big one that got away. With appetizers being served daily, you can enjoy your cocktail on the deck overlooking Lake Iliamna, the state's largest lake. The kitchen is brand new with professional-grade equipment and a professional chef that is ready to make your mouth water with fine dining. You may even have the chance to enjoy a wonderful BBQ outside on the deck while propane heaters keep you cozy and warm. The lodge includes wireless internet and satellite TV so that guests can keep up to date with business or their favorite sports teams.
Trophy rainbow is our focus in the fall. However, there are also opportunities for fantastic Dolly and char fishing.
Bristol Bay, Alaska.
Daytime temperatures can be as cool as the high 30s or as warm as the 50s F. The weather in Bristol Bay is unpredictable and can reach either extreme during the fall. Be prepared for everything from cool and rainy to cool and sunny. Plan on some type of precipitation to occur at some point during each day of the trip. Each fall season is different as to how the weather will behave from day to day.
We provide all rods and reels, flies, beads, weights, tippet, fly tying vise…the works. With that said, speaking as fishing fanatics, we understand completely if you want to bring your own gear. Here’s what we recommend:
Rainbow fishing: 6-8 weight (trust us – after several 50+ fish days in a row, you’ll want to be able to get them in quickly – 8 weight is ideal)
Grayling/Dolly/Char fishing: 4-5 weight
Sockeye salmon fishing: 8 weight
Line – weight forward floating line
A long rod, 8.5-9.5 is ideal
Ten foot leaders are the best choice with 8 to 10 lb. tippets.
Bubble strike indicators work best in order to pick up on light biting trout and char.
We are all about fishing but do have non-angling activities, including kayaking, hiking, bear viewing, and birding.
Getting to IBL is an adventure in itself, and it starts when you arrive in Anchorage. You’ll fly from Anchorage to Iliamna, where we will meet you for the last leg of the trip to the lodge. We recommend you arrive in Anchorage no later than Saturday morning, since your flight to Iliamna will leave Saturday evening (our typical packages begin Saturday and end on Friday).
