The Story

Discover world-class fly fishing on British Columbia's Chilko River in a private and exclusive Canadian wilderness setting, with accommodations at Orvis-endorsed Tsylos Park Lodge. Nestled within the Pacific Coast Mountains, 180 aircraft miles north of Vancouver, BC, is a virtual wilderness paradise. This is Tsylos Park Lodge. Those fortunate enough to discover Tsylos are treated to an adventure they won't soon forget.

Tsylos is located on the Chilko River and the north end of Chilko Lake, the highest and largest freshwater lake in North America. Once you arrive, you enter an alternate universe—one with snow-capped peaks, canopies of untouched forests, and glaciers that have sculpted out valleys over millions of years. No logging or industrial development here. Just nature at its purest.

Crystal-blue waters filled with wild, fat trout. No artificial stocking here—the Chilko River and Lake are home to wild, native, rainbow trout, and bull trout, and are the home and spawning grounds of steelhead, Chinook, Sockeye, and Coho salmon. Our rainbows average 18", but 24" is not unheard of!

Whether you're a novice or seasoned angler, you're free to fish the way you like. Wade the bank or float a line from a drift boat, jet sled, or float-tube. The fish are strong and healthy here—and they're fighters! It's not uncommon to see your fish torpedo across the surface of the water, cartwheel, jump repeatedly, and snap you off in an explosion of color and heart-stopping action.

At Tsylos, you can truly unplug, unwind, and let go. There are no cell phones, no Internet, no clutter, or crowds—just face-to-face conversations, infectious laughter, and simple pleasures. This is a rare opportunity to disconnect from the hustle of everyday life and just breathe.

On your Tsylos trip, you'll have the chance to bond with others who share your passion for fly fishing, Tsylos is sought after by people who value quality and have a zest for adventure. Here, old bonds are renewed and new ones are born. Even single travelers feel welcomed and included in our small, intimate group of guests. We're family-owned. Tsylos Park Lodge has been owned and operated by the McLean family for over 60 years. We've earned a solid reputation for delivering exceptional hospitality and distinctive vacation experiences. Our packages are designed by fly fishers for fly fishers. Just pick a package, choose a date, and tell us who you're bringing with you. Then, leave the rest to us. Gear Recommendations:

Due to the fly-fishing opportunities on Chilko River and Chilko Lake, a variety of fly-fishing gear is recommended. Overall a 5 or 6 wt. fly rod ranging from 9 to 9_ feet is a good choice for the Chilko River. A 7 wt. rod is optimum for wet fly fishing on Chilko Lake. Fly-Line and Leader, Weight-forward dry lines with 9 ft. long 3X or 4X leaders are best for dry fly fishing on the Chilko River. For fishing the creek mouths on Chilko Lake, you will need a fairly fast sinking line with 5 ft. 2X leaders. Be sure and bring 3X tippet. Waders and Float Tubes. For wading the river we suggest breathable or neoprene chest waders and the wading boots should have rubber soles, (cleats are not necessary).

Species:

Rainbow trout and bull trout: Strong, healthy, and wild.

The Chilko River rainbows are 100% wild and native to these waters. They are renowned for their coloration, size, fighting prowess, and their willingness to rise for large, visible dry flies. It's not uncommon to be taken into your backing and to see your fish torpedo across the surface of the water, cartwheel, jump repeatedly, and to snap you off in an explosion of color and heart stopping action.

These stunning rainbows grow to healthy sizes due to the large late summer runs of sockeye, Chinook, and Coho salmon. The spring smolt escapement from the lake and the never-ending summertime insect hatches make for healthy rainbow trout. You are likely to encounter wild 'bows over 20 inches and perhaps that fish of your dreams in the high-twenty inch range.

Bull trout are built for predation and here at Tsylos Park Lodge we target these apex predators both on the Lake and in the Chilko River. They grow to trophy sizes and are often seen hammering shoals of bait fish on the lake and will even chase down hooked rainbows to the boat. They offer exciting sub-surface action and it's not uncommon to see bulls of over 10 lbs.

Region/Terrain:

Crystal Clear Waters of the Chilko River

Imagine your perfect big, western trout stream and you're imagining the Chilko River. The character of the river is punctuated with long, deep pools, riffles, boulder gardens, shelves, structure, white water, and braided channels all of which offer a wide variety of fishing opportunities. The river is crystal clear and it's common to see large trout slowly rising from the river bed to take your fly. The constant flow and temperature of the river maximize insect hatches and the growth of the resident fish. The river flows out of Chilko Lake which acts as a natural filtration system, ensuring consistent water flow and its legendary clarity. The Chilko River then continues north easterly through the Chilcotin plateau and meets the Chilcotin River which, in turn, pours into the mighty Fraser River.

Typical Weather:

At Tsylos, we are located in the mountains in a semi-arid climate. Within a normal day you can experience a wide range of temperatures, from very cool to very hot. Temperatures during our summer season can range from a morning frost to 100 F. The best defense is to dress in layers, bring sunscreen, lip balm, and good hat.
