The Story

Join Orvis and our endorsed partners at Linehan Outfitting for a unique wingshooting and fly-fishing group trip to Montana. The Linehan Outfitting fly-fishing and wingshooting guides are some of the best in the state. Their goal is for guests to learn and experience facets of the sport that they have never encountered before, and to come away from activities with that “wow!” sense of accomplishment. This corner of northwest Montana is far less traveled. It's a place where the Pacific rainforest ecosystem crashes into the spine of the northern Rocky Mountains. It's a place of dense, coniferous forests and it smells like Christmas every day. The Kootenai and Clark Fork Rivers and the small streams that supply them with cold water throughout the season are still wild and fish well from the middle of June into October. Guests will have the opportunity to fish for rainbow trout, mountain whitefish, westslope cutthroat, and bull trout. During hunts, guests will focus on three species of native grouse (forest grouse) found on the Kootenai National Forest. There are no fences or feeders here. There is no baiting allowed and hunting adventures are all wild all the time. The accommodations for this trip are in keeping with the overall feel of the trip. From the flannel sheets to the hot showers to the grill on the porch, you will feel at home and comfortable when you return from a long day in the mountains or on the river. This one-of-a-kind combination trip is sure to provide memories of a lifetime.

Yaak Valley Log Cabins:

Guests on this trip will enjoy staying in one of three cabins, located in the heart of Yaak Valley, Montana. The cabins are cozy and well-appointed, providing everything you need. They are easily accessed off the main Yaak River Road just beyond the 35-mile mark in the Upper Valley. Access to the Yaak River and the surrounding Kootenai National Forest is immediate, offering easy family activity time if you desire. Each cabin has a queen bed, sleeping loft with two twin beds, one bathroom, a full kitchen, and a gas grill on the porch. The stars here are so bright at night you can practically hear them. There are few places as serene, or as worthy of a visit.

Meals:

Linehan Outfitting is committed to making sure that our guests feel welcome and cared for, and that they are surprised and delighted at every turn. This commitment is best expressed by Joanne Linehan herself, who prepares the lunches, or in some cases, all the meals for guests who come for a stay. It is no exaggeration to say that folks come to Linehan Outfitting for the hunting and fishing, but they come back for Joanne’s cooking. Her skill and care in the kitchen, along with her warmth and ready smile, make Joanne a beloved fixture here. Her food, however, speaks for itself: Joanne is decidedly among the best and most accomplished chefs in the destination sporting industry. For over twenty years she has been nourishing Linehan Outfitting guests with innovative meals and fresh, locally grown organic ingredients.

Alcohol:

Water and non-alcoholic beverages are provided. Guests will need to bring their alcoholic beverages of choice. We encourage guests to bring their own if desired. Alcohol may not be consumed prior to any shooting activity.

Linehan Outiftting takes great pride in feeding its guests well! Start your day with a hearty breakfast, served either continental buffet or plated. One guide will be assigned to every two guests to help oversee the experience of their choice. The guide team will have checked-in with the group the prior day to pair guests with guides based on their activity.

Fishing:

Guests who are fishing will drive to Libby (one hour) and rendezvous with guides at Linehan Outfitting’s Anglers Hut at 8:00AM. Anglers will fish the Kootenai River until 5:00PM and will drive back up to Yaak (one hour).

Hunters:

Guests who are hunting will be picked up by guides at 8:00AM. Hunters will be returned to Yaak cabins by guides by 6:00PM.

Once back at the lodge there should be plenty of time for a shower before cocktail hour around 6:00PM followed by dinner at 7:00PM.

*Please note that this itinerary is subject to change.

The Fishing:

The Kootenai River is primarily a rainbow trout fishery. Mountain whitefish, westslope cutthroat, and bull trout are also caught throughout the trip. Guests spend most of their time fishing dry flies. That said, guides are happy to nymph or pull streamers anytime as well and both are effective means of having a good day.

The Hunting:

There are three species of native grouse (forest grouse) found here on the Kootenai National Forest. Blue (dusky), ruffed, and spruce grouse are all found in healthy numbers. The forest grouse limit is three birds per gun per day in aggregate (total of three birds regardless of which species or combination).

What skill level is suggested?

Wingshooters must have experience in the field and especially with firearms. There are no exceptions. It is not in Linehan Outfitting’s business model to introduce guests to firearms or hunting. Experience is necessary and required.

How strenuous are the activities?

Fishing: Fishing guests will be in drift boats, so we can certainly tailor physical abilities and limitations to specific needs.

Hunting: Linehan Outfitting grouse hunts are authentic and physically demanding. Guests can expect to hike/hunt five plus miles a day in moderately dense vegetation at 3,500-5,000 feet in elevation. Access to the bird covers is via two track logging roads. This is an authentic grouse hunt and not necessarily for individuals who are not in decent shape.

Is this a child-friendly trip?

Although children of all ages are permitted to join this trip, state law only allows resident and nonresident youth of 10 or older to hunt with a valid license during an open season, with certain restrictions applying. Parents should use their discretion regarding their children's level of maturity and patience if they will be joining the trip.

What additional activities are available?

The cabins are surrounded by public lands on the Kootenai National Forest. Other activities available to guests are centered around the outdoors and include sightseeing and hiking on local trails. The resort towns of Sandpoint, Idaho, and Whitefish, Montana, are within striking distance but are 2.5 hours away. Glacier National Park is 3 hours away.

What is the typical weather?

Guests should expect daytime temperatures in the 80s and evening temperatures in the 60s. Standard fishing attire is perfectly fine for most summer days. Sandals and/or water shoes are perfectly good for summer months’ footwear while on the water. Generally, waders are not necessary during summer months. September and October are fall in Montana. Waders are often necessary, since by late September we can start to get some moisture. Guests can expect daytime temperatures in the 60s during September and 40-50s during the day in October. Mornings will be crisp in the fall. It's always best to check the local weather forecast just prior to your trip for the most accurate weather conditions.

What gear do you recommend?

Guests are encouraged to pack layers during all seasons and be sure to pack good rain gear. Linehan Outfitting can and is happy to provide all rods and reels for guests if desired. Hunting guests can expect crisp mornings with temperatures in the 30s and daytime temperatures in the 40s-60s. Mornings can also be wet from dew. Grouse hunting guests should pack layers and include good rain gear, waterproof chaps, or pants, boots, and hunting specific gear including vests and ammunition. Linehan Outfitting does not provide shotguns. A detailed packing list will be sent to guests upon booking.
