*Please note that this itinerary is subject to change.

Three Rivers Resort offers walk-and-wade and float trips daily in the summer. The resort is at an 8,027-foot elevation and most stream locations will not exceed 9,000 feet. Guides fish various waters in the valley, including small streams, larger rivers, and lakes. Optional private waters offer the best of the best private fishing ranches and clubs and their own stretch of private water on the Taylor River reserved for guests. Their diverse fishery offers the chance to target brown and rainbow trout of all sizes. Smaller tributary creeks can also provide opportunities for cutthroat trout and brook trout depending on the specific location. Techniques and presentation methods can vary from river to river and day-to-day conditions. In May, nymphing and streamer fishing is customary, with occasional dry fly and dry/dropper opportunities as well. Springtime can offer great fishing pre-runoff, but weather is variable year-to-year. Crowds are typically thin during spring, leaving the rivers peaceful and open.

Species: brown trout and rainbow trout.

How strenuous are the activities?

The walk/wade trips are moderately strenuous. Wading and light hiking are required. The float trips are less strenuous and typically don’t involve much wading, if any.

Is this a child-friendly trip?

Kids will have a great time fishing at Three Rivers Resort. They do not have childcare facilities and it is not suitable for small children. Parents should use their discretion regarding their children's level of maturity and patience if they will be joining the trip as an angler.

What other activities are available?

Three Rivers Resort offers whitewater rafting trips on the Taylor River from May through August.

What is the typical weather?

The weather in the Gunnison Valley can vary greatly in one day. It is not unusual to see temperature swings of 40 degrees F or more in one day and it can snow any day of the year. However, during the busy summer season, you can expect highs in the upper 70s and sometimes 80s while lows can dip into the 40s. Winters can be downright frigid with many daytime temperatures barely reaching above zero. The spring and fall months will fall somewhere between the winter extremes and summer temperatures. It's best to check the local weather forecast just prior to your trip for the most accurate weather conditions.

What gear do you recommend?

Guides will have all the fishing equipment needed for your trip, including rods/reels, waders/boots, flies, and terminal tackle. If you would like to bring your own fishing equipment, 9’ 5-weight rods are customary. 10’ 4-weight rods are also appropriate for many of the waters we fish. Guides will have landing nets. If you require a wading staff, please bring it along. Polarized sunglasses are required on the water. Pack a rain jacket and layers each day as the weather can change rapidly. It is recommended to bring a re-usable water bottle to cut down on single-use plastic. The guides will also have bottled water available.

The fly shop is open seven days a week from May through October, but during the off-season it is always accessible when the resort's General Store is open. Whether you are brand new to fly fishing, or a seasoned expert, the staff can help you get the gear and flies you need and point you in the right direction.

  • Sunscreen
  • Bug spray (summer)
  • Rain jacket
  • Hat Polarized sunglasses
  • Camera
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Personal items such as medications
