The Story

Patagonia River Guides (PRG offers world-class quail hunts from a select few lodges in Central Patagonia. Once thought of as just a mecca for trout fishing, Patagonia is becoming more and more known for the proliferation of valley quail and wonderful hunting opportunities. Guests hunting with PRG will enjoy a well-balanced program designed by Rance Rathie and Travis Smith, including: high-end lodging, incredible service, spectacular scenery and expertly executed hunting programs.

PRG offers more than 200,000 acres of private estancias, leased and managed exclusively for quail hunting. The countryside is awe-inspiring and each day hunters enjoy different terrain such as river bottom, lush spring creeks, dry coiron grassland, and arid canyons. Coveys are traditionally large and vary from 20-100+ birds per covey, tending to merge and multiply in size throughout the season. Birds are wild and hearty and flushes are exciting and random making Patagonia quail some of the most challenging birds one can hunt. The action is incredible and experiences shooters should expect the to bag the lodge limit of 15 quail and shoot a couple boxes of shells each session.

The experience is perfect for those looking for a unique venue in Argentina, and especially for those who enjoy walking with their gun in the field and working with well-trained pointers and hard-working guides.

The season runs from March 15th to May 1st and can be combined with other adventures offered by PRG or in country.

PRG's Lodge at Trevelin awaits guests' return from daily adventures in the Esquel and Los Alerces National Park area. The lodge consists of 12 spacious, tastefully appointed bedrooms, each with private in suite baths and all the comforts one would expect in a five-star facility. The lodge has two full bars – one with a pool table and 180-bottle scotch bar complete with adjacent wine cellar and cigar humidor; the second, opening to a huge wraparound deck – both perfect for sipping cocktails, sharing stories and gazing at the spectacular 360-degree views of five surrounding mountain ranges.

The lodge also features two living/relaxing rooms and a central dining area with indoor parilla (barbeque grill) where gourmet meals and world famous Argentine asados (barbeques) are served by our professional kitchen staff. PRG's Lodge at Trevelin always comes with complimentary private and individual rooms so a group of friends can individually enjoy a pleasant and restful night of sleep, and a little bit more space. PRG's professionally trained kitchen staff offers a unique blend of regional and gourmet to produce meals that showcase local organic fruits, meats, cheeses and vegetables (many grown in our own gardens). Guests enjoy Argentina's superb beef and famous Patagonia lamb asados (barbeques) coupled with diverse menus featuring wild game, pork, chicken, fish and pasta. Lunch and dinner are complemented by a rotating assortment of some of Argentina’s finest red and white wines so that guests can choose their favorite.

Guests choosing PRG North enjoy the same signature service, state-of-the-art equipment and professional guides as our PRG Lodge at Trevelin operation but from the classic large estancias around San Martin and Junin de los Andes in northern Patagonia. These estancias, or large working ranches, offer guests of PRG first-class lodging, delicious food and wonderful service as well as private access to some of northern Patagonia's best hunting and fishing estancias. The private estancia program offers guests a distinct experience while upholding a common commitment to high standards in terms of accommodation, gastronomy and service in addition to offering hundreds of thousands of acres of private property to hunt and fish.

The Hunting at Patagonia River Guides:

Sportsmen and women looking for the ultimate in wingshooting in Patagonia enjoy a well-balanced and deluxe lodging and sporting package with Patagonia River Guides. Guests enjoy superb lodging, service, food and beverage from select lodges and estancias in the PRG portfolio.

The typical hunting day starts with a hearty breakfast between 7:00 and 8:30 a.m. with guests heading out to the field by 8:30 – 9:00 a.m. Guests will enjoy a short drive to their exclusive beat, rested at least two weeks and often times only hunted once per season. Guides provide a mandatory safety talk each day and teach the basic but important safety lessons required to safely hunt quail. Afterwards, hunters load up with .20 or .28 gauge shells and their own shotgun or Beretta Silver Pigeon shotgun rented from the lodge. Guides prepare their own equipment and dogs for the hunt while also providing hunters orange, ear protection, chaps, and a bird bag if they didn’t bring their own gear. Guides carry ample water, extra shells and eventuality kit to the field.

Traditionally, two hunters accompany a professional guide and dog handler along with an assistant guide for any given hunt. Dogs work the fields, canyons, and springs to locate quail and guides also occasionally call to locate coveys. Guests must be physically fit and able to walk 2-3 miles on uneven terrain. Just like everywhere when hunting wild birds, those that walk the best and shoot accurately, enjoy the most success.

Patagonia Quail tend to bob and weave from bush to bush and are notorious for running ahead of the hunters until they find appropriate cover where they feel safe. Once pinned down by English and Elhew pointers, hunters are safely positioned for the initial covey flush. Coveys tend to be large and often times over 50 birds, so the flush can often take a few minutes for all the birds to leave heavy cover. Shots are challenging and the quail are wild fliers and incredibly hearty. Guests can often enjoy several shots from the same flush and if birds are pushed into grassland, singles are hunted. Guests will enjoy seeing hundreds of birds in a session and enjoy plenty of shooting, with the average hunter shooting 45 shots to bag 15 quail.

Guides are supplied with an incredible field lunch and often cook beef tenderloin steak sandwiches, Patagonia paella or fajitas in the field. Guests enjoy the lunch in the field very much and traditionally head back to the lodge after lunch or enjoy a few hours of fishing (optional and at extra cost) to fill our the afternoon. Those that head back to the lodge enjoy a couple hours of downtime and can request a massage, enjoy a siesta or just relax and enjoy the warm and welcoming hosts.
