The Story

Choose Orvis-endorsed Remota Patagonia Lodge for your fly-fishing adventure in Chile. Remota sits on the banks of Ultima Esperanza's Sound, which leads to the Pacific Ocean. From here anglers have access to typical Patagonian meandering spring creeks, as well as medium-size rivers that offer great fishing with hoppers and other terrestrial patterns. Some of these creeks are no more than four feet wide, and hold fish of every size. Mountain rivers are also not far. They offer great fishing for those who like to hike and see water that not many people do. From Remota you can also fish mid-size or big rivers. Anglers like to fish these when the browns start to swim upstream pre-spawning season.

Lakes and lagoons also offer great fishing from an inflatable cataraft (two anglers, one guide). Fish from the boat, casting to the shore and drop-offs in search of big browns. In general terms, the areas within our watershed have two classifications. Most of the fishing is for resident brown trout. They are happy and hungry from November through April.

If you take a good look at a map, you'll see the rivers in this area are connected to a seemingly endless number of lakes and the ocean. These waters hold healthy and strong fish moving back and forth using the streams as their highway. The best time to find LAKE and SEA RUN BROWNS*starts the second week of February, but March and April are the best months. (*This type of fishing requires particular conditions, so it is hard to predict and requires a willingness to be flexible and an understanding that it is extremely condition dependent.)

Remota is a world class hotel in the vast expanse of southern Patagonia. Visitors are embraced and welcomed as guests to this great house, attended to with dedication, delicacy, and concern for their interests.

Remota offers 72 spacious rooms, and extensive areas dedicated to a leisure experience. Quite spaces for reading and contemplating are located throughout the hotel. There is a temperate pool, sauna, hot tubs, souvenir shop, bar, salons, and of course an astonishing restaurant that offers the outstanding food.

The building and property surrounding Remota was designed with the purpose that guests live and feel apart of Patagonia, whether inside or outside the building. The architect, Germán del Solm received the National Prize of Architecture for how he has created a building that doesn’t compete with its surrounding, where nature is always a the focus, as it should be in such a stunning place. A warm, ecologic refuge connected with the exterior, inspired on the historical Patagonian sheep shearing sheds slanted by the wind, Remota truly is part of Patagonia

Season:

Our season for resident brown trout is from mid-October all the way until mid-April.

SPRING (October the 15th through November
SUMMER (December to March 15th )
FALL (March 17 through April)

Species:

Resident brown trout are the primary species you'll fish for. Some of rivers are ideal for catching larger numbers of fish that average on the smaller side. These rivers are a good place to warm up and get the idea of how to fish in Patagonia.

There are many other opportunities to fish rivers that hold larger fish, in the 18 to 24 inch range.

Region/Terrain:

Our operation is located in the south end of the Patagonian Andes' right on Ultima Esperanza's opening to the Pacific Ocean. From here we have access to flat and typical Patagonian meandering Spring creeks and medium-size grasshopper type of water. Some of them are no more than 4 feet wide, and it's possible to find any size of fish there. Mountain rivers are also in the menu. They are very interesting for those that like to hike and get to see water that not many people have fished. We have also a number of mid-size or bigger rivers. We like to fish these when the browns start to swim up river and they get ready for spawning season. Lakes and lagoons are available, and they are fun to float on an inflatable cataraft (two anglers, one guide). We fish them from the boat casting to the shore or drop-offs in search for those big browns. In general terms our watershed has two classifications.

Typical Weather:

Patagonia is influenced by the local steppe climate and the Polar current coming from the Antarctic. During the year, there is little rainfall in this part of Patagonia. The average temperature in southern Patagonia is 60'F. Wind is always a factor, and it can blow constantly. For most of the year, you can expect winds with a speed of about 15 - 20 km/h (9 - 13 miles/h). In the summer months however, winds can pick up and can reach speeds of about 80 to 100 km/h (50 to 65 miles/h).
