![]() Fly Fish Christmas IslandJoin Jesse Haller, Orvis Product Developer, and Lisa McLaughlin, Adventure Travel Manager of Front Range Anglers, for a week fly fishing Christmas Island in the Republic of Kiribati. Christmas Island (Kiritimati) is a destination that inspires adventure, and it is a mecca for anglers around the world. The fishing on Christmas Island is like no other saltwater destination on the planet, with nearly two dozen different species of fish to catch on the fly. Located approximately 1200 miles south of Honolulu and 120 miles north of the equator, Christmas Island possesses stable weather and fishing conditions year-round. With over 240 square miles of hard sand and coral pancake flats inside the lagoon, you will find yourself never having to fish the same flat twice. Except for fishing the blue water, all of the fishing on Christmas Island happens wading the flats. Many of the named flats–Orvis, Paris Texas, Nine Mile, Y Site–are legendary, and they are endless! There are many others called "pancake flats," as most of them are roundish in shape and seem to erupt off the bottom of the lagoon, making perfect reefs for both fish and anglers.

Jesse Haller is not only a product developer for Orvis but oversees the entire field-testing protocol for Orvis outdoor and is a member of the AFFTA board. Jesse has spent the better part of his life fly fishing, growing up in the Driftless region of Wisconsin. He guided in Colorado and eventually moved to Vermont where he landed in Middlebury as manager and a guide for an outfitter, Green Mountain Adventures. As an Orvis Product Developer, Jesse's role is to solve problems and increase people's enjoyment: "Things that work best are those things you don't think about. It lets you focus on what you're doing. We want anglers to be dry and warm, all the tools to work, and everything seamless. The creativity of designing products for end use is a really enjoyable process, but it's challenging. In a lot of ways, I'm trying to sell to myself several years ago. Would I be able to market this to me when I was a guide? Getting to work with our people out in the field and our internal team has been life changing for me and being able to help people enjoy the sport makes it all worthwhile." Lisa McLaughlin is the Adventure Travel Manager for Front Range Anglers, located in Boulder, Colorado. Having grown up under the guidance of her father Steve McLaughlin, owner of Front Range Anglers, Lisa has been fly fishing for much of her life. After taking some time from the sport to focus on school and work, Lisa was offered an opportunity to join the family business which she simply could not refuse! Since accepting the position at Front Range Anglers, Lisa has been traveling around the world hosting saltwater and freshwater Adventure Travel Fly Fishing Trips! Christmas Island, Hawaii, Belize, Florida, New Orleans, and New Mexico are among the epic destinations she has been able to explore. This will be Lisa's 4th trip to Ikari House, Christmas Island and she is beyond excited to get back onto the flats!
