Our Guide to Flannel Sheets – Shake the Winter Chill
If there’s one place you should be comfortable, it’s in your own bed. Unfortunately the same crisp, cotton sheets that make for luxurious bedding in the summer, let too much body heat escape in the winter, resulting in an often restless, chilly sleep. But there’s a simple solution—flannel sheets, which provide a touch of loft to trap more body heat, without making you too warm. Let’s take a look at why flannel sheets are our favorite sheets for winter, and what to look for when you buy them.
WHY IS FLANNEL WARM?
Flannel is a fabric with deep roots, going as far back as 16th-century Wales. The term applies to just about any twill or plain weave to which napping is applied. Napping is a technique used in weaving which leaves a fuzzy finish on the surface of the cloth. This same fuzzy surface gives flannel its super-soft feel next to skin and its great insulating properties. Where simple twill and plain weaves lie flat against the skin allowing heat to pass through the fabric, the fuzzy surface created by napping traps air and warmth and holds it next to your body, like tiny pockets of warmth.
HOW TO CARE FOR FLANNEL SHEETS
The soft finish of flannel sheets can quickly be lost if cared for improperly. When washing flannel sheets, you should first check the washing instructions on the product’s tag. Most manufacturers of flannel fabrics provide similar instructions, but it’s always best to check first.
WHAT CAUSES PILLING IN FLANNEL SHEETS
If improperly cared for, flannel sheets will “pill.” Pilling is the knotting or clumping of the delicate fuzzy finish on the surface of flannel. This damage to the fabric is often the result of two factors.
HOW TO BUY FLANNEL SHEETS
It’s important to know what to look for when you buy flannel sheets—they vary in quality just like regular cotton sheets. However, instead of looking at the thread count, the best way to measure quality in flannel sheets is by looking at the weight of the fabric. The heavier the fabric, the tighter the weave, resulting in longer lasting flannel sheets that feel softer to the touch.
