Day 1: Depart Barcelona To Santa Cilia Fishing Lodge

You'll meet your Orvis host and fellow travel companions in Barcelona for a transfer by car or train to Santa Cilia (transfer not included). Santa Cilia is located in the middle of the western Pyrenees which is considered the most unspoiled region in Western Europe.

Note: For guests flying through Madrid, you can take a high speed train to Zaragoza where you will meet up with the rest of the group.

Day 2: Valles Occidentales Park

After breakfast in the lodge's cozy dining room, we will head into the heart of the Pyrenees Mountains in northern Spain. Valles Occidentales Park is an impressive area surrounded by charming villages and hidden valleys. In the company of our local, expert guide, we'll spend the morning exploring the history of the Aragonese Kingdom. After lunch, we'll pay a visit to the San Juan de la Peña Monastery, a jewel of the medieval era and one of the oldest and most important monasteries in Spain.

Anglers will have an opportunity to pursue the elusive and selective native Mediterranean zebra brown trout. Expect a lot of action using primarily dry flies and some droppers.

Day 3: High Mountain And Crystalline Waters

Make sure you bring your camera to capture the breathtaking views as we journey by 4x4 vehicles up into the mountains to visit the small Romanesque villages. After working up an appetite, we'll stop for a traditional paella lunch prepared as a special treat by our chef. We'll return to the lodge with time to relax and enjoy a massage before dinner in the 15th-century dining room.

The Pyrenees are home to spectacular, high mountain lakes called "ibones". Anglers will fish in crystal-clear waters for brown trout surrounded by mountains over 9000 feet high. Brown trout are the most common type of trout in the rivers and lakes in the Pyrenees.

Day 4: Aragon Valley And Jaca

The Aragon River is located just in front of our lodge. Anglers will explore the Aragon valley where cold, high-mountain streams provide the perfect habitat for brook trout. The lower stretches are ideal for technical dry-fly fishing and targeting the trophy-size trout known to inhabit the pristine river.

Non-anglers will set out for the picturesque town of Jaca, located only 10 minutes from the lodge. Before a lunch of wine and tapas, we'll visit the impressive cathedral and the Diocesan Museum, a treasure in the heart of the mountains. In the evening, relax and enjoy a glass of local wine or a premium gin and tonic, and the world-famous delicacy jamon iberico (ham made from pampered pigs that eat only sweet acorns), served by our waiter.

Day 5: Ordesa National Park & Aren Lodge

After breakfast, we'll travel east to Ordesa National Park, the first protected areas in Spain and is recognized as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The incredible mountain scenery and dramatic canyons make it one of the highlights of any visit to the Pyrenees. Anglers will have a special opportunity to fish for brown trout in a pristine spring creek and the main river within the national park while the non-anglers enjoy an easy hike in one of the most stunning landscapes in Spain. You'll feel like you've stepped back in time on a walk through the walled, medieval town of Ainsa, dating back to the 11th century. Surrounded by mountains, Ainsa is considered one of the most beautiful towns in Spain.

Day 6: Eastern Pyrenees & Aren Lodge

After breakfast, we'll travel east to the small village of Arén, a town of less than 400 inhabitants ocated on the border of Aragon and Catalonia. After lunch we will head to the local fishing spots in the Pyrenees.

The Gorge of the Bella Durmiente (Sleeping Beauty) is an impressive site formed by the Noguera Ribagorzana river. An easy-going hike leads us to stunning views of the 3,000-foot limestone cliffs and blue-green river below.

The anglers will fish a gin-clear tailwater where it is very easy to wade and home to a healthy population of trout due to the stable water levels, insect great life and consistent waters temperature. We'll sight fish for big rainbows and browns using small may fly imitations, dry flies and nymphs.

Day 7: Aigües Tortes National Park

On our last full day in the Pyrenees, we'll head to Aigües Tortes National Park, which is known for its natural beauty and UNESCO protected area of Romanesque churches. We have a special treat planned for lunch featuring organic beef raised locally in the valley.

The anglers will travel to the best-conserved Mediterranean river in Catalonia. The Pyrenees Mountains have a second range in this area where you'll find beautiful freestone rivers with moderate currents holding healthy browns and some strong rainbows. With over ten years of experience exploring the area, our team of expert guides will take you to the best pools, runs and flats in search of the biggest trout to help you maximize your chances for success.

Day 8: Return To Barcelona

After breakfast, we can arrange an optional car or train transfer back to Barcelona for flights home.

PLEASE NOTE: The nature of adventure travel requires flexibility, so there may be changes to the itinerary to offer you the most diverse, interesting and authentic experience possible. Occasionally, we may adjust the route or schedule based on fishing conditions and to respond to unforeseen events or special opportunities that were not formerly available to us. Rest assured we will do everything in our control to make your adventure extraordinary.

La Jacetania

A 15th-century villa ideally located on the banks of the Aragon River in the quaint village of Santa Cilia. Five well-appointed country-style bedrooms offer the perfect respite at the end of a long day of fishing or exploring. Each bedroom has been updated while maintaining its rustic personality and charm. The lodge also has a wader room, a drying room, and a modest, but well-equipped fly shop.

Swap stories at the end of each day over a glass of regional wine on the terrace or in the old winepress building used by the monks of San Juan de la Peña Monastery 500 years ago.

La Ribagorza

This is not a traditional fishing lodge, but a wonderful, intimate hotel nestled in the village of Aren. Each of the 15 air-conditioned, double rooms have en-suite bathrooms, cable TV, and balconies. There is a lounge on the ground floor, a limited spa facility, and a room for drying your waders.

Meals

We’ve arranged a variety of unique culinary experiences that will delight wine and food enthusiasts. The meals are typical of Northern Spain and are accompanied by an impressive selection of wines from the region’s best wineries. Wine lovers will have the option of sampling special reserve wines from our host’s private cellar.

In Santa Cilia, you’ll dine on mouth-watering Mediterranean and Spanish cuisine in the recently-restored 15th century dining room. Using fresh, local produce, the menu at the lodge is second-to-none.

In Aren, meals are served at the nearby hotel restaurant, which is recognized as one of the most authentic hot spots in the region. The menu features local, organic ingredients and is anything but ordinary. The owner, Juan Antonio, and his family have owned the restaurant since 1715, and their attention to culinary detail is deliciously evident.

Fly Fishing In Spain

Verdant green valleys, high altitude wildflower meadows and the majestic Pyrenees mountains provide a spectacular backdrop to great trout fishing in Northern Spain. Ivan Tarin and his team of guides at Salvelinus are very well recognized for their hard work and knowledge. With over 200 miles of mountain terrain, you'll have opportunities to catch native Mediterranean zebra trout, barbel fish, brown, rainbow, and brook trout in streams and lakes that can only be accessed with special permission - including several protected natural areas that are recognized as UNESCO Biosphere Reserves. The wide varieties of water see little pressure and are home to trout that do not see a lot of flies. For the purist, the dry-fly fishing is exceptional!

Non-Angling Activities

The Spanish Pyrenees are home to some of the most beautiful villages and breathtaking countryside we've ever seen. In the company of local, expert guides, you'll discover Romanesque villages and an ancient stone monastery dating back to the Middle Ages. Take time to absorb the incredible scenery and learn about the history of the region on easy-going hikes in an impressive gorge and Ordesa National Park, the first protected area in Spain and a must-see for any trip to the Pyrenees. No visit to the Pyrenees would be complete without visiting a vineyard; we'll take you to one of the region's finest organic wineries to sample the local wines followed by a barbeque lunch.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic flyfishing and cultural experiences My wife and I booked the Pyrenees Tour with Ivan Tarin and his Salvelinus team. I flyfished and my wife did the tour for the accompanying persons: visiting historic attractions, old monasteries, churches and chapels, castles, wineries and tastings and wellness sessions. Flyfishing was exceptional. I was overwhelmed by the knowledge and dedication of the Salvelinus guides. We were simply delighted and amazed by the quality of services we received. Ivan and his whole team are highly professional. Lodges, food and wines are also outstanding. In one word: everything was just perfect! Highly recommendable!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing 18 Day Northern Spain Tour & Honeymoon Because we both enjoy Spanish wine, fishing, great food & cultural experiences beyond your typical tourist type, we turned to Ivan Tarin & Salvelinus to help us plan our honeymoon & we cannot recommend them enough for ANY type of vacation plans and, PS: You don't have to be into fishing. Their bespoke (custom) travel program is exactly that - tell them what you enjoy & what you'd like to experience & they create an epic itinerary for your approval, just for you, that includes everything possible you have chosen with a few wonderful surprises thrown in. Their tours offer all-inclusive food, wine & beverages, cultural tours, english speaking guides, & transportation. We carried Euro to make purchases & to tip the wonderful service we received but otherwise when they say "all inclusive" it is precisely that. They also included many extra's not on our itinerary - a stop at a ceramics festival in a town along our route once they discovered I loved pottery, and a side trip to a cultural festival being held nearby where we watched the running of the bulls from a special location above the street - to name just a few. Upon our arrival they took care of everything - no transportation worries, no scheduling each day, no making reservations, no language barrier concerns, no laundry to take care of - we got the full VIP treatment. All of our tours of our chosen wine region - La Rioja - (and/or cultural tours) included a private driver, one of our wonderful Salvelinus guides (Sara, Maria Jose', Daniel, Xabier, Mark - we are grateful!) and with most, we were the only ones there with the winery's host for private tours of wineries old & new. We toured in Rioja, Zaragoza and Somontano regions. There were both planned & delightful surprise stops in villages along the way to sample delicious tapas, tour castles, museums, ancient churches & monasteries, join in festivities that were happening & to experience the culture on a very personal level. Our favorite morning was spent in a small village where our hosts, an engaging, young couple who made their own wine, prepared amazing food for us in their home and gave us a tour of their pristine, rustic wine cave. We could never have experienced that without the Salvelinus connection. In honor of our honeymoon they pulled out the stops by arranging a private tour of one of the oldest wineries where we toured the nearby castle & they arranged a wine pairing meal prepared by a Michelin Star chef, for us, alone. We kayaked in beautiful turquoise water & Salvelinus got special permission for us to fish out of the kayaks. We enjoyed 2 boutique hotels and stayed at 2 fishing lodges in great comfort - all at different locations & and all featuring great food & wine. (Thank you, Juan Antonio & Ruti for your hospitality!) As for the fly fishing portion of our stay, we caught Browns, Rainbows, "Zebras" & Barbel thanks to our excellent fly fishing guides - Head Guide, Aleix, Pierre and Terence. We learned a great deal from each of them and all of our guides were professional, friendly & fun. They laid out excellent shore lunches for us, complete with table linens & wine on some days & on others we enjoyed a local restaurant near where we were fishing. We loved everything about this trip and we are so glad that we entrusted Ivan & the Salvelinus Family with planning our honeymoon. They went above & beyond our requests and our expectations to make it memorable and very, very special. We cannot wait to return to the beautiful Pyrenees!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Spanish adventures The guides are excellent. The fishing has a formulaic feature, i.e. each day to a pre arranged place (you might tell Ivan (who is very engaged) what you want, I think he might try to accommodate. The Spanish mountain scenery is captivating but if you have fished in similar places in the world not totally unusual. The fishing is dependent (as always) on what style of fishing you prefer, i.e. nymphing, streaming dry fly. The food was very interesting and generally good. The non fishing sightseeing was said to be excellent. The Monastery was much more interesting to be at than the Aren location but questionable accommodations for the cost--but that may be more of a personal taste. All in all, an interesting adventure.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best fishing experience of my life The trip was called “The Ultimate Pyrenees Experience”. Four nights stay and three days fishing at two lodges nestled in the Spanish Pyrenees - but that does not begin to tell the story. The itinerary promised excellent food and wine as well as exciting, challenging and varied fishing - and that’s exactly what I got. Even before I reached the first lodge, in the tiny village if St. Cilia, I was treated to a cultural and tapas tour round Zaragoza. We were a party of 7, five of whom fished and 2 who enjoyed a varied programme of culture, hiking, yoga and kayaking. It is fair to say no one was disappointed. From St. Cilia we pursued the lightening fast Zebra Trout in boulder strewn rivers and gushing high mountain streams. We also had the opportunity to fish for barbel on the fly - which is something that had been on my bucket list for a long time. This involved stalking and sight fishing for these golden torpedos, wonderful! The second lodge was in the village of Arren, a 2 hour drive away, a journey that took in vineyard visits and a sumptuous lunch. From Arren we fished for truly wild brown trout in beautiful locations that were never far from the majestic mountains of the Pyrenees. It was here I hooked the biggest trout of my life which, despite the valiant efforts of my guide, eventually “got away” - just as the strength in my right arm was beginning to fail. This is not just a fishing trip, it is an immaculate experience - first class food, wine and fishing while being looked after by a team of knowledgable, patient, helpful (and strong) guides. I have fished in North America, Scandinavia, Scotland and New Zealand, each had something special to offer but this was, quite simply, the best fishing experience of my life.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fun & Unique! I signed up for the companion portion and was able to customize it to being outside a lot. I'm not retired and still work so it was important to me to have an outdoor adventure. I hiked, kayaked, glided, climbed stairs on the side of a mountain, and visited medieval towns dating from the 10th century! Ate superb food and wine!! Went to a wine tasting-ate some more there! I had a lot of fun with the other companion who was up for the adventure. The guides have so much knowledge of the region and are also fun to hang out! They were like the cousin you haven't seen and then you just click.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An exceptional cultural and historical tour! As a non-angler, my week in the breathtaking Pyrenees was an immersion into Aragonese history and culture. I had the pleasure of spending time with two excellent guides. Maria Jose, with her knowledge and eloquence, introduced me to a number of Aragon's beautiful medieval monasteries, churches and charming villages. As we explored a village one day, we ate various tapas along the way; another day we visited a potter's studio; and another some of the anglers joined us and we toured two wineries and delighted in a fabulous lunch. With my other fantastic guide, Lur, I had the opportunity to enjoy the scenic beauty of the Pyrenees as we leisurely hiked along mountainsides and through forests, conversing along the way. We enjoyed lovely picnics in picturesque spots and yoga in a meadow. It was especially lovely that one afternoon it was planned that my angling husband and I would be in the same vicinity and have lunch together at a beautiful farmhouse restaurant. Ivan and his team made every effort for me to have an experience and journey through the Aragon region as rich and fulfilling as that of the anglers. This trip went far beyond my expectations. Many thanks to Ivan and his team, and to our Orvis hosts, Scott and Erin.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Real people, unique experiences Ivan Tarin's Salvelinus logo says it all--definitely "real people and unique experiences." My wife and I returned two weeks ago from an Orvis-hosted trip run through the Salvelinus outfitter. Ivan and his team of guides put together an outstanding week of fishing in the eastern and western Pyrenees that provided for each angler a variety of terrain and species that seemed suited to his or her own particular goals and abilities. Ivan was the perfect host, providing great conversation, unique experiences, and excellent Spanish food and wine (these last things being both streamside and in beautiful lodges). He even arranged a special midday meal where he and I, in our waders, met my wife at a farmhouse turned restaurant, where we enjoyed traditional foods of the region and a nice bottle of local wine before heading back to the river. Might have been the best moment of the trip, it was that good. I had a blast wading rivers and mountain streams with guides who were extremely knowledgeable, instructive, and supportive. And patient. . . haha, in my case very patient. Each day of fishing was a special experience; different waters, different elevations, different species, different techniques. Besides the fishing, the accommodations and meals were exceptional. The character of the historical lodges was surpassed only by the wonderful people who managed schedules, meals, transport, etc. Definitely "real people" who imparted the best qualities of their country. I hope to be able to return to the Pyrenees to fish with Ivan and Salvelinus again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An Amazing Week The week in the Spanish Pyrenees with the Salvelinus team and the Orvis group was wonderful. To start, the scenery was absolutely stunning. The rivers we fished were beautiful and the surrounding countryside was gorgeous. I didn’t expect to see snow capped mountains in June, but we fished one day in a river valley surrounded by them! Salvelinus provided excellent service in every regard. The Salvelinus guides were top notch. Our primary guide was Pierre, who was outstanding - he always identified the best spots on the river to cast a line and didn’t hesitate to change flies as often as necessary if the fish didn’t strike. He was extremely organized and a very careful driver on high mountain roads. The lodges were quaint and immaculately clean and the food was incredible - the kitchen staff went out of their way to accommodate both food allergies and preferences. Every member of the Salvelinus team was extremely hospitable and it was evident that their primary focus was on the complete satisfaction of each member of the group. The group itself was wonderful, from the Orvis trip hosts, Scott and Erin, to our fellow travelers, whose laughter and friendship we so enjoyed during our week together. It was a truly amazing week with Salvelinus and our fellow Orvis travelers and a trip that I will never forget.
