The Story

Much like our Orvis Schools, this Virtual Casting Instruction is set to benefit any skill level, with the Premium Package giving greater opportunity to connect with your Orvis Instructor directly through a follow-up video chat and coaching session, after receiving initial analysis of your cast. Whether you're a seasoned pro, just starting out, or looking to fine-tune a very specific aspect of your cast, our team of Orvis instructors can help. Orvis Schools have been teaching people to fly fish for over 60 years (and now include 50+ schools in the US and worldwide) and this team of instructors has been teaching and sharing their 100+ collective years' worth of fly-fishing instruction experience, so they are looking forward to connecting on-screen.
Who are the Orvis instructors?:

Pete Kutzer, Orvis Fly-Fishing Instructor and Endorsed Operations Manager, has been an instructor at Orvis Fly-Fishing Schools for nearly two decades, teaching at our flagship Manchester, VT location as well as specialty schools around the US and abroad. Pete is a native Vermonter, a lifelong angler, an avid fly-tyer and fishing partner to his wife and daughter (as well as a few other friends and colleagues, too). Pete writes for Orvis News "Ask a Fly-Fishing Instructor" as well as "Home School with Peter Kutzer".

Truel Myers is the Head Fly Fishing Instructor for the Orvis Company and has been teaching Orvis Fly Fishing Schools for nearly 30 years. He teaches in the Orvis Flagship School in Manchester, Vermont - as well as both 1 & 2 day, and specialty schools in Florida. Truel is a native of Florida and divides his year between Florida and Vermont which allows him to teach – and fish – year around. He has been fly-fishing for 50 years, in both fresh and saltwater around the United States, as well as Belize, the Bahamas, Mexico, Canada and the Netherlands. He also conducts Instructor Training Programs across the country.

Hutch Hutchinson, Orvis Fly-Fishing Instructor and Orvis Sporting Travel Planner, calls Western Colorado home with his wife, son and hunting dog. Hutch has been fly fishing for 53 years, and enjoys connecting with students to better understand how to help them improve their cast and fishing skills. For more than 35 years he has been a professional fly fishing guide and fly casting instructor and for almost 20 years he has been a Fly Fishers International Master Certified Fly Casting Instructor. Hutch has had the privilege of coaching thousands of students as well as professional fishing guides in over a dozen different countries worldwide. It doesn’t matter if he is exploring unknown waters in South East Asia or teaching kids how to catch 8 inch trout in the local pond, Hutch loves to help people discover what will make them the happiest.

Kyle Leard, Fly-Fishing and Wingshooting Instructor, has been working with Orvis for 17 years, and pursuing his passion for fly fishing for close to 25 years. A Vermont native, like Pete, Kyle teaches primarily out of our Manchester, VT location, but also travels to instruct at various Orvis specialty schools and group trips, including our saltwater specialty schools in Belize. When he’s not on the water, Kyle has a love for bird hunting (and his dog Mabel, his hunting partner in her younger years) and has worked in the Orvis rod factory helping to build rods during the off-season.

What all do I need access to in order to take part in this program?

All you need is the ability to record videos of yourself casting from about 40 feet away on a smartphone or tablet and submit those videos online or through a text. (We’ll communicate specific instructions once we know a little more about your device!) Additionally, your Orvis Instructor will look to connect with you via WebEx for your real-time coaching session.

Can you give me a basic idea of how the process works?

Once you submit your name to the student inquiry form, a representative from Orvis Adventures will be in touch to discuss billing and next steps. You’ll be put in touch with your Instructor, submit your video, and receive feedback from your Instructor, all within a few days. After the initial analysis and feedback, your Orvis Instructor will arrange a video chat to continue to work on your goals and answer questions real-time.
