Henry's Fork of the Snake River - Upper (Above Ashton Reservoir), Idaho Fly Fishing Reports & Conditions

The North Fork of the Snake river, better known as the world famous Henry's Fork is a river of diversity. From a small stream at it's headwaters near the Mt/Id border, it quickly becomes a full sized river with the meeting of the millions of gallons of water a day, emerging from Big Springs. Rainbow trout make up the majority of the trout population, but brook trout, cutthroat, hybrids and browns, including a new state record caught in 2007 that weighed an amazing 27.3 pounds can also be found.
The river is very fertile, and rich in insect diversity, Various species of stoneflies, mayflies, caddis flies and other aquatic insects can be found throughout it's length. Fisherman travel from around the world to fish the salmon fly hatch and spend time casting to the ultra-selective trout that call the Railroad Ranch section home. At times these hatches can provide some of the finest and most exciting dryly conditions in North America.



Prime fishing time is usually late May thru late October, but much of the river is open year around, and possibilities for good fishing can occur 365 days a year.
