Fly fishing hatches in order of importance:
Fishing is good. Hoppers are still a good bet afternoons noon-5pm. Rubber-legged patterns like Ron's Yellow Skunk are also perfect on these hot, summer days. When clouds and rain come midweek, have a baetis #20. Beetles, ants, and hoppers continue to produce fish all afternoon. Yellow stoneflies #14 are also in the air now and will move some better fish evenings from 9-10pm. Mousing is now in full swing from dark to dawn. Rubber-legged patterns, attractors like Patriots, Royal Wullfs, and parachute Adams are producers as well. Mousing is good now from dark to dawn. This is widely regarded as the best self-sustaining trout water in the Michigan. With no impoundments and wadable water from Mancelona Road all the way to Smithville, this offers many miles of easy access, hatch water. Sand and gravel bottom and steady gradient make for good hatches from April through September. M72 downstream to CCC Bridge offers some 15 miles of wadable, floatable "Flies Only" water. The ...
"Flies Only" water is also open after general trout season as "catch and release only water". "Upper Manistee" also includes water from Smithville to Hodenpyl Dam. This water is floatable with increasing numbers of warm water species downstream and some very large brown trout. Check with Orvis Streamside to find the best water and hatch info.
Fish hoppers in the warm temps afternoons until late afternoon, then switch to a PMX or other rubber-legged pattern until dusk. Mousing is moving some very large fish from dark to dawn.
