Smallmouth fishing should really turn on this week, weather pending. Don;t just focus on the "sexy" water (i.e. runs and pools) - smallmouth love to hold in slack water and especially near structure. Look before you cast! You may see cruising or "laid up" smallies in these areas which will help you make a good presentation.
