We offer a full selection of fly rods, reels, lines, outerwear, flies, leaders, tippet, etc. Our friendly staff will be happy to assist you with any questions you could have. We help anglers prepare for an upcoming day on a local river as well as get clients geared up for an international trip. On the rare chance we don't have what you're looking for, we will order it for you! Breckenridge Outfitters always offers free shipping.

What is Provided:

Your trip includes use of our waders, boots, rod, reel, and terminal tackle. If you have your own equipment, you are more than welcome to bring it with you. All of these items are also available for purchase in our store.

Gear Recommendations:

Typically, here in the central mountains of Colorado, we use 9 ft. 5 wt. and 9 ft. 6 wt. rods. We also recommend plenty of other set-ups for fly fishing if you plan to euro nymph/tightline or streamer fish, or target larger species such as pike. We use both mono and fluorocarbon leaders and tippet usually in the sizes of 6x-4x.

What to Bring:

In an attempt to reduce our plastic usage, we would love it if you brought your own water bottle for use during the day. It can be any bottle of your choice, our guides will have a water jug for you to fill your bottle. Thank you for understanding and thank you for helping us kick plastic!

The incidentals are Colorado fly-fishing license*, flies, and gratuity for the guide. None of these need to be worried about prior to arrival as we will equip you with all of them when you arrive.

*A valid driver's license, state or government-issued ID, or passport is required to obtain a fishing license for all anglers 16 years and older in the state of Colorado. If you have never had a Colorado state wildlife license, you will also need to know your social security number in order to get a license.

  • Comfortable pants or shorts to wear under waders
  • Socks
  • Rain Jacket
  • Fleece or sweatshirt
  • Hat or visor
  • For winter, extra layers of warm clothing, waterproof coat, fingerless gloves, and warm hat

More Recommendations:

  • Sunscreen
  • Bug Repellant (summer months only)

Season:

Though our summer and fall, fishing seasons tend to be the most popular, but our winters are not to be missed. Because our season is all year long, there is a very diverse range of fishing opportunities, from casting large dry flies in summer to technical nymph fishing in the winter season. Some highlights of our season include the rainbow and cutthroat spawn in the spring and the brown and brook spawn in the fall. In each of these shoulder seasons, you can experience great streamer fishing and catch large fish that do not usually expose themselves in the summer.

Species:

Target species are brown trout, rainbow trout, brook trout, cutthroat trout, cutbows, pike, whitefish, and suckers.

Region/Terrain:

We are located in the heart of Breckenridge in Summit County, Colorado. There are six gold medal rivers within an hour of Breckenridge, including the Arkansas, Blue, Colorado, Eagle, and South Platte. We also fish many stillwater lakes, reservoirs, and private ranches. These waters offer diverse fishing environments ranging from small streams in high mountain plains to fishing big rivers surrounded by canyon walls and even fishing pristine high-alpine reservoirs filled with trophy fish. Our county also offers a variety of different activities for the family as well as restaurants and bars for after-fishing activities.

Typical Weather:

Weather in the mountains is always changing, but below are the typical expectations:

Spring: Can be a mix between cold evenings and cold days to sunny and 60 degrees F. We sometimes see occasional snow and rain, as well.

Summer: Absolutely gorgeous in the mountains of Colorado. Days can see highs in the 60s-90s F and evenings are pleasant and cool with the lows in the high 30s to mid 40s.

Fall: The best weather of the year, in our opinion. The Colorado high country will start seeing cooler nights and beautiful vistas with the leaves changing. Highs for the days are in the 60s and 70s F and lows are typically in the 30s at night.

Winter: Usually full-bore around here with a lot of SNOW. Snow means good year-round water, so we are always happy to see it. Highs during the day can be in the teens to the 30s F and lows can be...well cold. Our motto for the winter is "There's no bad weather, just bad gear.
