FAQS

You can, if it’s warm enough and you’re okay getting wet—that’s why it’s called wet wading. Waders help you stay warm and dry when you're after trout, salmon, or other coldwater fish. You’ll want to wear waders when:

  • You’re in the water most of the day, and the weather’s cold
  • You’re fishing cold tailwaters
  • You’re chasing steelhead outside of summer
  • You’re saltwater fishing in New England

The right fly fishing waders depend on where you’re fishing, how often you’re out there, and how you like gear to fit. You’ll want something waterproof, durable, and built to move with you. Orvis waders offer an active fit and breathable design, so you can move freely and stay comfortable all day.

Trout have great vision, so the color of your waders can make a difference. Look for subtle tones that blend in with the water to help you stay less visible in the stream. That’s why our waders come in light gray.

We use rugged CORDURA® fabric in our waders because it’s tough, lightweight, and breathable—everything you want when you’re out on the water all day.

Not all of them, but every pair of Orvis waders is. Ours are made from waterproof, breathable fabrics that let air flow so you don’t feel stifled or weighed down. Even our heaviest-duty styles keep you comfortable when you're layered up. If you're fishing in warm weather, our Ultralight waders are a great choice to help keep you cool. Plus, our waders feature reinforced seams to handle long days on the water.

To size waders, start by measuring your chest, waist, and hips, and use the largest number as your chest or bust measurement. For inseam, use your pant measurement as a starting point, then add two inches. Finally, use your current shoe size. Consult the size chart on each product page to find your size. All Orvis waders come with adjustable suspenders and belts to help you fine-tune the fit.

Some waders do come with built-in boots, but not all of them. If that’s what you’re after, look for “bootfoot” waders. If you go with stockingfoot waders instead, you’ll need a pair of wading boots to go with them.

You’ll carry most of your gear in a sling pack or bag, but it’s helpful to have a few wader pockets for your fly box, phone, and anything else you want close at hand. For cold-weather fishing, you’ll want handwarmer pockets as well.

We work with partners like CORDURA® to create materials that hold up to miles of hiking, rock scrambles, and tough riverbeds. Details like water-resistant YKK AquaGuard® zippers and rubberized pocket tabs keep things working season after season.
